Masaya ako dahil madami kaming pinuntahang lugar. Isa na doon ang Ujung Kulon National Park sa Pulau-­Peucang kung saan nakakita ako maraming iba’t-­ibang uri ng hayop. Natuto rin akong makisalamuha sa mga tao doon.
Nalaman ko na marami ding iba’t –ibang uri ng bee o pukyutan na aking ikinamangha. Marami na palang ginawang pag-­aaral doon tungkol sa pagsasaayos at pagpaparami ng trigona, Apis cerana at Apis dorsata na mga uri ng wild bee. Para sa akin, ang pagpaparami at proseso ng pag-­ani ng mga ito ay isang napakabago at January 2012

Noong Disyembre 12, 2011 ay naisagawa ang “soft opening” ng tinatawag na Agong Salapa Heritage Center sa Puerto Princesa.
Naaalala ko pa nang sinisimulan pa lang buuin ang konsepto ng Heritage Center. Nagkaroon ng isang pagpupulong ang Board of Directors ng NATRIPAL, mga elder mula sa katutubong Tagbanua, Batak at Palawan at kasama din dito si Miss Crissy Guerrero ng NTFP. Pinag-­usapan nila kung ano ang magiging disenyo nito, anu-­ano ang mga lalamanin at iba pang mga bagay kaugnay sa pagtatayo ng isang heritage center. Ngunit matingkad rito ang palihan ng ano ang magiging kahalagahan ng pagtatayo ng heritage center ng NATRIPAL. Sapagkat kung matutupad nga ito, ito ang siyang magiging kauna-­unahang heritage center sa buong Palawan na ang nakapagtayo din ay isang katutubong pederasyon-­ang NATRIPAL Inc.
Naging katuwang din sa ginawang pagbubukas sina kapaki-­pakinabang na paraan. Ayon kay Dr. Phung Huu Chinh, Direktor ng Bee Research Development Center mula sa Vietnam, ang pulot ng trigona ay maaring panggamot sa karamdaman ng tao lalo na ang kanyang pollen at beeswax na punong-­puno ng bitamina. Ito ang pangalawang beses kong nakita si Dr. Chinh at muli ay marami akong natutunan na mga bagong k aalaman mula sa kanya. Ang Madhu Duniya ay ang pagtitipon at sama-­
samang pag-­aaral tungkol sa mga iba’t-­ibang uri ng pukyutan ng iba’t–ibang bansa. Naisip ko na dahil sa pagtitipong ito, ang mga munting mga kaalaman ay napagsasama upang makabuo ng isang mas malaking kaalaman. Hanggang sa huli, ang saya at pananabik ko ay lalong tumindi dahil sa aking mga natututunan at sa nakikita kong ganda ng bansang Indonesia. Sa panghuli ay nagpapasalamat ako sa mga EDO ng NTFP-­Task Force sa ibinigay na pagkakataon sa mga katutubo na dumalo sa pag-­aaral o pagtitipong ito.

Dinaluhan din ito ng mga panauhin mula sa Provincial Tourism Office, Provincial Culture & Arts at Provincial Economic Enterprise Development office, mga katutubong Aeta mula sa Panay at mga Agta-­Dumagat mula sa General Nakar. Mayroon ding mga dumalo na bisita mula sa bansang Cambodia sa pangungunga ni Femy Pinto ng NTFP-­EP. Ang pangalang “Agong Salapa” ay mula sa mga salitang “agong” na isang katutubong instrumentong pang-­
musika na pawang ginagamit ng tribong Tagbanua, Batak at Palawan. Ginagamit ito sa pagtugtog ng musikang pansayaw. Ito din ay ginagamit pantawag sa buong tribu kung may mga pagpupulong, pagbibigay alam kung may mga bisita o panganib na darating. Ang “salapa” naman ay katutubong kagamitan din ng tatlong tribu na hugis lalagyan ng mga alahas. Dito itinatago ang mga mahahalagang gamit at kayamanan ng mga katutubo at maging ng nganga at iba pang ginagamit panigarilyo.
Ang naipagsamang pangalang ito ng heritage center ay sumisimbolo at nagsisilbing panawagan sa lahat ng mga katutubong Tagbanua, Batak at Palawan na tipunin at ilagak ang mga katutubong kagamitan at kaugalian bilang bahagi ng pagpapanatili ng kultura ng Tagbanua, Batak at Palawan. nbta

Rain Forest Restoration Initiative:
Advancing Rainforestation Technology

What is RFRI?
The Rain Forest Restoration Initiative (RFRI) is a network of organizations and individuals from the academe, peoples’ organizations, non-­government organizations, and business sector engaged in environmental conservation, research and development. Its mission is to promote rainforestation or the use of native species for forest restoration and other land use management objectives in the Philippines. The ultimate principles of the network include science-­based forest restoration, value of native species as a genetic resource and for ecosystem services including climate change mitigation, partnership with local communities and integration of local knowledge and practices in forest restoration, provisioning services and forest-­related livelihood options to society, and protection and conservation of remaining forests for biodiversity conservation and other ecosystem services.
RFRI Core members
The RFRI was first established in 2004 together with Haribon’s ROAD (Rainforestation Organizations and Advocates) to 2020 Campaign with a goal of reforesting 1 million hectares with native species by year 2020. It was revived in 2009 and has expanded to consist the Institute of Tropical Ecology-­Visayas State University (ITE-­VSU), Environmental Leadership and Training Initiative (ELTI), Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE), Haribon Foundation, Non-­Timber Forest Products-­Task Force (NTFP-­TF), Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation (PTFCF), Philippine Native Plant Conservation Society, Inc. (PNPCSI), University of the Philippines Los Banos-­
College of Forestry and Natural Resources (ULPB-­CFNR), and individual members such as Ms. Ester Batangan and Dr. Perry Ong. The RFRI is willing to accept new members who wish to support rainforestation to reach its potential through research and development, education and advocacy, technical assistance, and project implementation work.
Conference: Mainstreaming Native Species-­Based Forest Restoration
For many years, the government and the environmental sectors unceasingly provide funds and support on large-­scale reforestation projects in the country to address widespread loss of ecosystem services, including biodiversity maintenance, carbon sequestration and watershed protection. A problem with these reforestation efforts, however, is the use of exotic species which oftentimes are not well-­matched to the ecosystem where they are planted. These fast growing, foreign species are said to be bio-­invasive, prone to disease outbreaks and with limited value in terms of reestablishment of watershed and biodiversity. This conference brought together research scientists and practitioners who have been leading some efforts of propagating native types of trees, to discuss how to begin “mainstreaming” the usage of native tree species. Headed by ELTI, in cooperation with RFRI and University of the Philippines, the conference was held at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City last July 15-­16, 2010. Rainforestation training programs
In 2004, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources issued Memorandum Circular No. 2004-­06 or simply the “Guidelines in the Integration of Rainforestation Farming Strategy in the Development of Open and Denuded Areas within Protected Areas and other Appropriate Forest Lands”. This year, trainings programs were conducted by RFRI members, ELTI and partners for project implementers such as the Protected Areas Superintendents (PASu) and the National Power Corporation (NPC) watershed managers. These provided participants with knowledge and skills on how to develop rainforestation sites and native species nurseries. Rainforestation Research and Monitoring Training was also given to colleges and universities who are members of the Philippine Forestry Education Network, Inc. (PFEN) to teach them how to collect data on germination, growth and survival, and on database management. January 2012

In celebration of the 2011 International Year of Forests, the RFRI is holding the RFRI Seminar Series: Green Mondays from 11:00-­12:00 every first Monday of the month from July 4, 2011 to February 6, 2012. The seminar series is intended to raise awareness about the value of native forest biodiversity, conservation and sustainable development of “forests for people.” This seminar series is being held in the UP-­Diliman Institute of Biology, with live simulcast on www.dilc.upd.edu.ph and www.rainforestation.ph.

The RFRI launched this year the Leonard Co Award for Best Native Forest Tree Nursery. Top 3 winners (Nabingkalan Indigenous Seedlings Producers Association, San Carlos, Negros Occidental-­grand prize;Imbayao Community-­Based Forest Management Farmers Association, Malaybalay, Bukidnon-­1st runner up; and Brgy Talisay Nursery, Lipa City, Batangas-­2nd runner up) were awarded during the first symposium of the PNPCSI in November 19-­20, 2011. They received a plaque of recognition and certificates. The best forest tree nursery also received PhP 100,000 in cash.
The network is planning to make this an annual event to encourage more nursery owners to raise native tree seedlings. nbta

Tinawag na “Mam-eh” o “pagbabahagi” ang kaunaunahang Aeta Festival ng Pagkaing -Gubat ang pagdiriwang.
Dito ay nagkaroon ng pagbabahaginan ng pagkain at yaman
ng kulturang Aeta. Bukod dito, layunin din ng gawain na
isulong ang pagkilala ng karapatan sa lupaing ninuno.

Dumalo sa pagsasanay ang siyam (9) na myembro ng PASAKAMI Yamang Gubat Program. Ito ay sa ilalim ng EU-­PLAN Project. Naging tagapagsanay dito ang finance staff ng NTFP-­Exchange Programme.
Layunin ng pagsasanay na maunawaan ng mga kalahok ang kahalagahan ng pagkakaroon ng tama at bagong talaan ng mga pinansyal na transkasyon, matutunan ang pagkakaroon ng angkop na sistema sa pagtutuos kasama ang pag-­iingat ng libro ng negosyo.
Gayundin, ang pagsasanay ay isinagawa upang maturuan ang mga myembro ng CBE na maghanda ng ulat pampinansyal at makabuo ng mga polisiya at desisyong pinansyal na naaangkop sa negosyo.
Sa loob ng dalawang araw, ilan sa mga natalakay na paksa ang mga sumusunod:

(4) Mga pangunahing dokumento ng katatayuang pananalapi at kanilang mga elemento (The Basic Financial Statements and their Elements). Ito ay ang mga sumusunod: (a) Balance sheet at ang mga elemento pera na lumabas or pinagbayaran);
(c) Journal book ;
(d) General ledger; at
(e) Subsidiary ledgers (8) Paggawa ng ulat pinansyal (financial reports)
(9) Pagbuo ng polisiya at planong pinansyal
Dahil sa kakaunti lamang ang mga kalahok, naging kada CBE ang pagtuturo. Ang mga halimbawang transaksyon na ginamit sa palihan (workshop) ay angkop sa kasalukuyang operasyon ng kanilang samahan. Higit ding naging madali ang pag-­unawa at pag-­aaplay ng mga paksang tinalakay kapag ang kanilang samahan na ang pinag-­uusapan. Bilang pagwawakas ng pagsasanay, ang bawat CBE ay mayroong takdang gawain pagbalik sa kani-­kanilang samahan. Sila ay inaasahang magsumite ng kanilang balance sheet, income statement at cash flow statement mula Enero 1 hanggang Hunyo 30, 2011. He explained how they are only supposed to harvest honey from the short trees; hence the need for rafters. They have an internal control system to ensure that there are no smokers or smoke coming from farms and no chemicals in the water. He related that they have harvested for 15 years, and that it only started with 3 men. Today there are 13,000 hectares for 200 farmers, and one farmer can have 500 rafters to produce 2 tons. ore than a hundred indigenous peoples, coming from different tribes from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, have gathered last October 13, 2011 at the National Museum in Manila in the first ever national Indigenous Peoples Cultural Summit.
The summit, organized by Senator Loren Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committee on Cultural Communities, was the culminating event of the three regional assemblies that brought to light the different concerns that various indigenous cultural communities (ICCs) in the three major regions of the Philippines would want the government to address.
The regional assemblies brought out the common concerns of the indigenous peoples’ rights to ancestral lands and domains, self-­determination, governance, human rights and social justice. A presentation on the Convention No. 169 of the International Labor Organization vis-­à-­vis the Philippine Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) was given, as well as the flagship projects for indigenous peoples by the projects for indigenous peoples by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples. Convention No.169 is a legally binding international instrument open to ratification, which deals specifically with the rights of indigenous and tribal peoples. The Philippines has not ratified Convention No. 169 and there were once again calls from the summit participants for the Philippine government to ratify said convention.
