Lilia Pineda, in time for the provincial government’s celebration of Independence Day, yesterday. The four rebels, the Governor said, had decided to lay down their arms and trust their provincial government to be a partner in their quest for genuine change and development. Among those who surrendered was the group’s Western Pampanga commander Eduardo Abuque, who faces 10 arrest warrants and is now under the custody of the Provincial Public Safety Company (PPSC). Abuque, according to police, is allegedly behind the death of high-ranking officials from the Philippine National Police, Philippine Air Force and Armed Forces of the Philippines. Three others were with him, namely Rannie Vital, Omer Trajano, and Lanlan Serrano. Yes, we all love and await these days when we don’t have to wake up early in the morning, do the same routine, and go to work. In other words, it is a free day. On June 12, the whole country will mark the 117th year of the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain in 1898. The Independence Day, also known as Araw ng Kasarinlan or Araw ng Kalayaan, commemorates the day when Emilio Aguinaldo, through the Acta de la Proclamacion de la Independencia del Pueblo Filipino, declared independence from the Spaniards, and when the Philippine flag has been unfurled for the first time. Simply speaking, this day is intended for all of us Filipinos to venerate on what is regarded as the most significant parcel of our history, because that is the day that we became free from the conquistadors, and that finally, we have been recognized as a sovereign nation. Undoubtedly, this event symbolizes the bravery, unity, and patriotism of our countrymen, who courageously fought for our land and its people. Independence, according to Merriam Webster, is “the time when a country or region gains political freedom from Michelle Catap-Lacson outside control.” Looking at Brainwaves “We are not free—our nation is beleaguered with corruption, immorality, poverty, delinquency, futility, despondency, and treachery.” this definition, we can say that we are a free country, in the sense that we have our democracy and we have our own government that steers the entire nation towards its supposed progress and development. We are indeed a free and independent nation. But there is another meaning to the word independence, and that includes the concepts of self–sufficiency, self-reliance, self-subsistence, or self-support. This definition encompasses the ability of each individual to be independent because he or she can brainwaves... Page 7 Taken for granted by Liza D. Libu I T is a known fact that the Filipino subject has been taken for granted by some students, because of the fact that the subject is taught in the lingua franca. What they don’t know that this subject is very hard to teach. It is in public high school where you can meet good Filipino teachers. But although we are Filipino, we find it difficult to teach and study the subject. What we tend to think is that we already know the subject well, but it is a very difficult subject – even if the teachers and the students are pure, full-blooded Filipino. Because of the prevalence of the internet and social media, in this day and age of technological advancement, some students have forgotten – or chose to forget – their Filipino roots. Also, because most subjects are taught in English, students have difficulty speaking the language all the time. Also, they find it a bit boring. One trick that may work is to speak the language as often as you can – and thinking of ways on how to spice up the lecture. How do we awaken their senses? How do we make them understand that Filipino is just as important as English? An innovative way to re-introduce the love for Filipino is during Filipino class, no one should be permitted to speak any other language. This will be a very challenging task, and will encourage them even to research about particular Filipino words they are unfamiliar with. Also, teachers should encourage students to appreciate Filipino literature being taught in school, for this is the TEACHER’S CORNER... “Sobrang ampalaya na ni Sharon, Lubao Mayor Mylyn Pineda-Cayabyab, sponsors PMPC teambuilding A NG SAYA-SAYA, it’s been a relaxing and refreshing three days at the Poracay Resort last June 5 to June 7, where the Philippine Movie Press Club had their annual excursion for a bonding and teambuilding exercise. The grand affair was sponsored by the generous mayor of Lubao, MylynPineda Cayabyab. PMPC President Joe Barrameda expressed profuse thanks to the mayor in behalf of PMPC. Bilang konsehal, nagsilbi si Alma bilang National Secretary-General and National Executive Vice President bago siya naging 1st female national president of the Philippine Councilors League (PCL). The said seminar will cover basic traffic rules, driving manners and right conduct, re-orientation on traffic signs & symbols, awareness on fines and penalties, and compliance with designated parking and loading/unloading zones.
