ANGELES CITY – The Angeles
City Traffic Management Board

According to Councilor Amos

found.
One of the measures being
implemented is the transfer of
the pick and drop area for students of Sto. Rosario Elementary
School along Miranda Street.
School service vehicles are now
required to pick or drop their
passengers along Jesus street.
In addition, the board also
approved the identification of
loading and unloading bays in
various parts of the city proper.
Commuters are advised to use
the loading and unloading zones

Back into the
mainstream
FOUR rebels – members
of the New People’s Army
– have surrendered to Gov.
Lilia Pineda, in time for the
provincial government’s celebration of Independence Day,
yesterday.
The four rebels, the Governor said, had decided to lay
down their arms and trust
their provincial government
to be a partner in their quest
for genuine change and development.
Among those who surrendered was the group’s Western Pampanga commander
Eduardo Abuque, who faces
10 arrest warrants and is now
under the custody of the Provincial Public Safety Company (PPSC).
Abuque, according to police, is allegedly behind the
death of high-ranking officials from the Philippine National Police, Philippine Air
Force and Armed Forces of
the Philippines.
Three others were with him,
namely Rannie Vital, Omer
Trajano, and Lanlan Serrano.
In citing their reason for
surrendering, the rebels told
the Governor about the difficulty of living in the mountains. They may be armed, but
their lives do not have any direction, as far as the four former rebels are concerned.
We hope they find the right
track in going back to the
mainstream.

HE separation of Church and
State is guaranteed in our Constitution. Under Article 2 Section 6 of the Philippine Constitution,
the separation is inviolable - which

religious test shall be required for the
exercise of civil or political rights.” In
layman’s terms, it means no one will
be persecuted in practicing and proclaiming his choice of religion.
However, the influence of the
Church in our political system is undeniably recognized. Since majority
of the Filipinos are Roman Catholics,
the power of the Catholic Church is

extensive and dominant. The participation of the Catholic church in
our political structure serves as an
instrumental ingredient in choosing
our leaders. Whoever the Catholic
church endorses during an election,
the possibility of leading the race of
the appointive one is palpable.
Last Sunday, the Catholic Bishops
Conference of the Philippines ( CBCP)
issued a pastoral letter emphasizing
the need for change in our political
system. CBCP urged all Catholic be-
ers and political dynasty is oftentimes treated with a cold shoulder
among the poor sector of the country, which embodies the majority of
qualified voters. We all know that
we have become cynical of our government and the election process,
however, during elections, we often
lose sight of the relevance of our
right to suffrage because of personal gain.

lievers and all Filipinos to vote leaders with no record of graft and corruption and to put an end to political
dynasty. The CBCP believes that the
Filipino people has the capacity to repeal the existing political structure of
our country by choosing our leaders
wisely and by rejecting any element of
political dynasty. But given the track record of
our political history, the call of
the CBCP against corrupt lead-
sectors to stop allowing our political
system to be debased and manipulated, but we never listen. The political
result remains the same. But there is
still hope for us. We need to create a
new political order and choose leaders who are God-fearing, and with an
iron fist to achieve the long-awaited
corrupt-free Philippines.
It’s never too late to listen and
hope for a change. Our collective effort is the solution. •

The freedom
we all need
S
O I bet each and every one of us is frantically
looking forward to this coming Friday, aside
from being the last working day of the week but
additionally, it is a national holiday. Yes, we all love
and await these days when we don’t have to wake up
early in the morning, do the same routine, and go to
work. In other words, it is a free day.
On June 12, the whole country will mark the 117th
year of the Philippine Declaration of Independence
from Spain in 1898. The Independence Day, also
known as Araw ng Kasarinlan or Araw ng Kalayaan,
commemorates the day when Emilio Aguinaldo,
through the Acta de la Proclamacion de la Independencia del Pueblo Filipino, declared independence
from the Spaniards, and when the Philippine flag has
been unfurled for the first time.
Simply speaking, this day is intended for all of us
Filipinos to venerate on what is regarded as the most
significant parcel of our history, because that is the
day that we became free from
the conquistadors, and that
finally, we have been recognized as a sovereign nation.
Undoubtedly, this event symbolizes the bravery, unity,
and patriotism of our countrymen, who courageously
fought for our land and its
people.
Independence, according
to Merriam Webster, is “the
time when a country or region

in the sense that we have our democracy and we have
our own government that steers the entire nation towards its supposed progress and development. We are
indeed a free and independent nation.
But there is another meaning to the word independence, and that includes the concepts of self–sufficiency, self-reliance, self-subsistence, or self-support. This definition encompasses the ability of each

Taken for granted
by Liza D. Libu
I
T is a known fact that the Filipino subject has been
taken for granted by some students, because of the fact
that the subject is taught in the lingua franca. What
they don’t know that this subject is very hard to teach.
It is in public high school where you can meet good Filipino teachers. But although we are Filipino, we find it difficult to teach and study the subject.
What we tend to think is that we already know the subject well, but it is a very difficult subject – even if the teachers and the students are pure, full-blooded Filipino.
Because of the prevalence of the internet and social
media, in this day and age of technological advancement,
some students have forgotten – or chose to forget – their
Filipino roots.
Also, because most subjects are taught in English, students have difficulty speaking the language all the time.
Also, they find it a bit boring. One trick that may work is to
speak the language as often as you can – and thinking of
ways on how to spice up the lecture.
How do we awaken their senses? How do we make them
understand that Filipino is just as important as English?
An innovative way to re-introduce the love for Filipino
is during Filipino class, no one should be permitted to
speak any other language. This will be a very challenging
task, and will encourage them even to research about particular Filipino words they are unfamiliar with.
Also, teachers should encourage students to appreciate Filipino literature being taught in school, for this is the

NG SAYA-SAYA,
it’s been a relaxing and refreshing
three days at the Poracay

Movie Press Club had
their annual excursion for
a bonding and teambuilding exercise.
The grand affair was
sponsored by the generous
mayor of Lubao, MylynPineda Cayabyab. PMPC
President Joe Barrameda
expressed profuse thanks
to the mayor in behalf of
PMPC.
“Lahat ng gastos siya
ang sumagot, pagkain, sasakyan at yung stay natin

sabi pa ni Joe sa mga
opisyales at members ng
PMPC.
Bukod sa bonding at
teambuilding ipinahayag din ng pamunuan ng
PMPC ang mga nanalo sa
kanilang annual writing
contest. Pinarangalan at

lola kaya siguro ganun.”•
Alma Moreno, iiwan
na ang pulitika
ATLONG term or nine years na nagsilbi si Joey bilang
mayor ng Parañaque at siyam na taon din ang term
ng ex-wife niyang si Alma Moreno bilang konsehal ng
naturang lungsod. Nasa last term na si Alma ngayon.
Bilang konsehal, nagsilbi si Alma bilang National Secretary-General and National Executive Vice President bago
siya naging 1st female national president of the Philippine Councilors League (PCL).
itong balak na muling tumakbo for
any position sa ngayon.
