Summer Reading at a Glance
Background on the novel Fahrenheit 451 BY Ray Bradbury:
The novel depicts a dystopia (an imaginary, but frightening society) in
which books are not read, but burned. The novel takes place somewhere in the
future in which technology and entertainment have become a priority, and
people no longer take the time to read or think. In addition to the changing
values of the people, the government has also deemed the reading of books
illegal, and, subsequently, firemen do not put out fires, but rather start them in
order to annihilate all books. The novel is about the protagonist, Guy Montag,
who is a fireman who begins to question his occupation as well as society’s values.
The title refers to the temperature at which book paper catches fire and burns.
