Mask Making
(Semester I Final Project)
Getting Started:
Now that you have done some thinking and writing about your family
heritage, you are going to create a mask representing you and that family
background. This will be a mask that represents you and only you,
incorporating the things from your heritage that will make it unique. In a
sense, you are creating your own, personal family crest or symbol in the
form of a mask. Include as much as you can and make it personal. The
more this means to you, the more interesting it will be to look at and the
more fun you will have building it. Use everything you have learned thus
far. Build carefully and build correctly. This is the project that you really
want to show off your ceramic skills on because this is your Semester I final
project! While building your mask, incorporate all 4 building techniques
(pinch, coil, slab and extrusion), and you will also include some form of
Multi-Media. Multi-Media is anything that is not ceramic that is added onto
your piece for aesthetic purposes. The list of things that can be used goes on
and on. If you have an idea for what you might use, run it by your instructor
for advice. In almost every case, it is highly recommended that you obtain
your multi-media early on so that you can make sure it fits into your piece
and that things are built to fit, as opposed to trying to make something fit
after it is already been fired and is too late. Really look at mask design and
see what you can sculpt to make your mask stand out from the rest. Think
about how you would like to display this mask when you’re done for grading
and viewing. If you want to hang it on the wall, be sure to add holes on the
sides that a wire can be run through later after it is completed. Perhaps you
want to incorporate a stand or something to make this mask sit up when
being displayed? Be very careful in dealing with stereotypical imagery that
may make your mask look “cheap” or might be offensive to the culture you
are depicting. As always, have fun with this, be creative and make
something truly unique to you that no one has seen before!!! Put your effort
into this one, this is your final project for the semester (equivalent to your
final exam)
