Context/setting: In this task, students will be working individually towards creating a mask for a production on “Strange Fairy tales”. Students must create a construction plan for the item and met the requirements of the production needs. Over the weeks prior to this assessment, students should have had sufficient teaching and learning opportunities to learn about mask, styles of mask, types of mask and mask construction.. The students might be involved in such activities as: • Brainstorm • Small group discussion • Research • Planning • Charting • Directed practical class activities • Demonstrations Assessment activity This assessment activity has three parts. Task one involves the student selecting a character from the class play “Strange Fairy tales”, they do not necessarily need to perform that role. They need to create a brief for the role and what practical aspects need to be considered when designing the mask. Task two This task involves the design process. The first part needs to consider construction methods, being mindful of the practical requirements of the mask. Students need to investigate materials they will use for their desired outcome. The second part of this plan is a design for the mask identifying and labelling important parts of the mask that need to be made. Task Three Students will construct mask according to their construction plan and design. They will endeavour to maintain a photographic journal of the process of their mask. If there are any changes they must justify their changes. Students will reflect on the success of their mask. In completing this activity, the students will: Chose a character to make a mask for and create a brief and requirements to depict that character. Identify materials needed to depict that character and they must consider the needs of using the mask in performance Students must draw and label a detailed design and outline construction plan of the mask they are going to make Students are to maintain where possible a journal/ preferably a photo journal of their mask creation process Students are to construct their mask according to their design and construction plan justifying any changes they make. Award of Grades • For award with achieved all outcomes must be achieved as specified in the elements. Assessment can occur via group activities, however there must be evidence that each student can complete all aspects of the standard. As students develop their assessment, teachers can offer guidance that may prompt the student to further investigation and consideration of their ideas. Teachers must not correct assessment errors, or suggest specific ideas Resource requirements: A useful reference for safe working practice is the Department of Labour publication Guide for Safe Working Practices in the Theatre and Entertainment Industry in New Zealand, which can be accessed at: http://www.osh.govt.nz/order/catalogue/ipp/theatreguidelines11.pdf
