Cassini Activity Request (CAR) Form
Observation Name:
Titan EUV-FUV Imaging
Requesting Instrument:
UVIS
Objective: (both measurement and scientific objectives)
The objective is to obtain spatially-resolved high signal/noise images of Titan with the UVIS
EUV and FUV spectrometers. This data will be used to look for latitudinal gradients in
hydrocarbons and nitriles. Spectra of aerosols at a variety of phase angles will help constrain
aerosol size distribution.
Description of Activity:
Orientation and pointing:
Point the center of the FOV to the illuminated part of Titan. The optimal orientation will depend
on the phase angle. Possibilities include (1) slit aligned parallel to the equator to capture centerto-limb variations over a narrow latitude band, (2) slit aligned perpendicular to the equator to
allow the atmosphere to rotate under the slit to build a more-or-less square image near the subspacecraft longitude, or (3) slit aligned parallel to the limb to capture a range of latitudes near the
limb. The slit will either be fixed pointing at a specific longitude relative to the sub-spacecraft
longitude to let the atmosphere rotate under the slit, or scanned at a rate of 4 micro-radians per
second perpendicular to the slit direction (i.e. around the spacecraft Z axis) to build up a twodimensional image.
Turn on EUV and FUV using the narrow slits. Begin 250-second integrations lasting N hours
where N is to be determined by how much time is available or by how long it takes to build up an
image of the desired size. At a scan rate of 4 micro-radians per second it takes 2500 seconds to
scan 10 mrad. A square image 64 milli-radians long in the direction perpendicular to the slit
takes 4.4 hours. The UVIS internal windowing and binning will preserve full spatial/spectral
resolution. The total number of pixels per integration is 2*1024*64= 131072. The data rate
with SQRT9 compression is 9*131072/250s = 4.72 Kbit/s.
Activity Time Period: (window when the activity can take place)
1) Titan Distance 50,000 - 150,000 km
