Residential Living Housekeeping Crew – Position Description Summer 2016 Returners – read carefully Position Summary Housekeeping tasks include linen distribution, deep cleaning, and general preparation of buildings for summer conferences. The housekeeper works with a crew of others, under the direction of the housekeeping crews supervisors. The successful housekeeper understands and promotes the concept that the efforts of individual crew members, and conference housing as a whole, can have a positive impact on the university. Specific duties • Participate in training and work during the week following the end of the academic spring semester. • Attend daily meetings with the housekeeping supervisors to discuss projects and future plans. • Complete daily work assignments. • Work with a team in preparing the residence halls for each conference arrival and departure. • Clean rooms, hallways, lobbies, bathrooms and other residence hall areas as required. This will include sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, mopping, changing lights, reporting maintenance problems, changing linens, towels, etc. and collecting lost and found articles. • Deliver and remove refrigerators, fans and extra beds to/from conference rooms as needed. Note: items that are hand-delivered are no more than 50 pounds. • Be available to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, long and irregular hours and be "on call" as needed. • Any other duties requested by the summer housekeeping supervisor, the assistant director of summer conferences, or the director of summer conference housing. General qualifications and eligibility The requirements of this position are not compatible with taking classes in the summer. Therefore, preference in hiring will be given to applicants who are not taking summer classes (on-line classes taken on one’s own time are okay). As a guideline, you must: • Be an enrolled student at a UW System school • Be at least 18 years of age by May 23, 2016 • Be in good conduct standing at UWSP • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 • Exhibit a solid work ethic • Be able to work well with other people • Demonstrate ability to work independently of a supervisor • Have a general knowledge of Residential Living • Possess good leadership, communication, organizational and time management skills • Be available to work from May 23, 2016 through August 31, 2016. Fall 2016 residence hall staff will be released early for training. Schedule is subject to change due to specific camps’ itineraries. Previous employment in any summer conference position does not guarantee future employment in that same position or any position. Time off Each HC member may be allowed up to eight (8) days off during the summer, though not necessarily consecutively (in addition to regularly scheduled days off). Time off must be requested in writing and approved by the supervisor at least two weeks in advance. Requests for time off may or may not be approved, depending on the conference schedule. No time off should be expected during the month of August. Specific days off needed in August must be disclosed prior to signing your employment contract. Pay rate Compensation for work performed will be $8.55 per hour, plus merit earned from previous summer residential living work experience. Housing A single room in Hansen Hall is offered to all summer staff while on contract. Living on campus in the summer is optional for housekeeping crew members. If you will be living on campus in the fall, you will be able to stay on campus the entire summer (while employed). Employees who will be living off campus in the fall will have housing on campus only until August 17, 2016. Those individuals must make different housing arrangements after that time. Not having a place to live after August 17 will not be a valid reason to break your employment contract. Contract period The dates of employment are May 23, 2016 through August 31, 2016. Miscellaneous • Forty hours per week is possible for most weeks, but IS NOT guaranteed. We reserve the right to send employees home early when it gets slow. • Housekeepers must be able to work through the entire contract period. • Conference shirts and nametags are provided and need to be worn while working. • There are several closed time periods/weekends, meaning that no vacation time will be allowed, due to the specific needs of these conferences: o o o • • • Special Olympics Basketball Team Suzuki turnover June 9-11 July 15-17 July 23-24 If you accept a full time position in Residential Living, you may not work for another UWSP department concurrently, as this would put you into overtime pay status. You may have other employment outside of UWSP if approved by your supervisor. Hours scheduled for the HC position have priority over outside jobs. Work will continue after the closure of summer conferences in order to prepare residence halls for the return of students for the academic year. Employees will not be released from their summer employment contract early unless they are fall residence hall staff who must leave early for training.
