Findings:
• Most had a low literacy level
• Most did not eat very many
vegetables or fruits because it
was not provided at the food
bank
Diagnosis
• Deficient knowledge r/t language
barrier, low-literacy, and access to
resources
• Risk for imbalanced nutrition
• Ineffective self-health management

Obstacles
• The target population does not have
transportation
• Time restraints due to working,
transportation, and child care
• Low literacy
Tips:
• Use translation phones or a translator, don’t just
give them a paper and assume they can read
• Use visual aids and demonstrations
• Ask them to repeat and demonstrate
information taught
• Be culturally competent and look at each
patient individually
• Observe and assess body language
• Ask open-ended questions to confirm
understanding
• Inform them of community resources available
