GUIDELINES FOR ESSAYS AND RESEARCH PAPERS I. 1 Essays and Research Papers A. Should have an introduction paragraph 1. Should have a sentence that serves as a hook (first sentence) 2. Should show a problem, pose a hypothesis, or a state an objective that will be explored in the paper (please define clearly) 3. Should have a thesis statement (main idea) 4. The thesis should have a solution – NO MYSTERY NOVELS!!!! B. Should have a main part 1. Should have an explanation of the problem, hypothesis, or objective – complete paragraph 2. Should have an explanation and detail of the solution, objectives, or hypothesis – complete paragraph 3. Each of the above paragraphs should have at least four sentences C. Should have a conclusion 1. Should be at least two sentences 2. Should restate what you told me II. Essays and Research Papers should be printed double-spaced. III. Essays and Research Papers should be typed in Arial or Times New Roman 12 point font. IV. Essays and Research Papers should be done with APA formatting. V. Check the APA sample citations handout for how to do both in-text citations (they follow a quote or paraphrased sentence) and the Reference section of GUIDELINES FOR ESSAYS AND RESEARCH PAPERS 2 your paper. Remember that the References page(s) should start a new page and is usually the last page of your paper. VI. Essays and Research Papers should usually have at least one reference – your textbook if nothing else. VII. Most things you hand in during college should have an APA formatted Cover Page. This should have the following information on it in the following order. It should be centered both horizontally and vertically on the page. 1. Title (Here at ITT Tech, this should usually consist of the Unit # and Assignment #: “Unit 1, Research Assignment 1”) 2. Subtitle (example: “Exploring Programming Languages” 3. Course ID with section identification and name (“PT1420 Introduction to Programming”) 4. Your full name or the full names of the team members that wrote the paper 5. School name: ITT Tech – Tempe 6. Instructor Name: “Instructor: Ms. Kate Eskesen” 7. Date: “December 13, 2014” VIII. The page number should be in the page header’s upper right hand corner, thereby showing up on each page, including the cover page. It should just be the page number – you should not put the word “Page” in front of it. If you want to, you can put a shortened version of the paper title or subtitle in front of the page number, separated by 5 spaces.
