Seminar in Theological Research
Assignment 1, Annotated Bibliography: Books, Journal
Articles & Reference Works
Due September 15, 2009, at the beginning of class
Name:________________________________________________________________
Proposed Thesis Statement:
_______________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________
Select three books or ebooks closely related to your chosen topic. To locate books in the ORU Library, search the online
catalog. Modify the search strategy you have used in the past by making it less specific, since books are generally broader in
scope than journal articles.
Select three articles related to your chosen topic from three different Journals or Periodicals. To locate journal articles,
search the online Journals Database doing a subject keyword search using the main words in your Thesis Statement.
Select three articles related to your chosen topic from three different theological and biblical encyclopedias or
dictionaries. Do NOT use a general encyclopedia such as Encyclopedia Britannica. To locate encyclopedias, search the online
catalog doing a subject keyword search using one of the following: church*, theolog*, Christian*, religi*, Bible, or missions
with either encyclopedias or dictionaries. See also handout, “Bibliography of Theological Reference Works.”
In creating the annotated bibliography, cite each book, journal article or reference work according to Turabian format (see
examples in Turabian, chapter 9 and Vyhmeister, chapters 5 and 9). After the citation, double-space, and then write the
annotation. The annotation should include at least two paragraphs, one which summarizes the resource and one which
discusses how the resource is of particular interest/relevance to your topic. If, in reading the resource, questions or issues
arise which you are interested in pursuing as a focal point of your research paper, include them as well. If you use quotations
from the resource, be sure to include the page number(s) involved in parentheses after the quote. Conclude with an evaluative
statement, explaining how the resource will help you in writing your research paper. Do not include items in the bibliography
that you feel are of little or no relevance to your research topic.
Use 12-point Courier New or 12-point Times New Roman font. Each citation and its corresponding annotation should be on a
separate sheet of paper. (Place the bibliography in a single Word document, but place a page break between the different
citations.)
Single-space the citation, indenting the second and following lines five spaces (hanging paragraph).
Double-space the annotation, indenting each paragraph. Add pagination, and observe margins specified in
the Research and Writing Manual. Be sure to staple this sheet to the front of the assignment.
