Math Facts Fluency th Grade level: 4 and up Subject: Math Standards / Benchmarks: D.4.2a & D.4.3 Demonstrate understanding of basic facts B.4.5 In problem-solving situations involving whole numbers, select and efficiently use appropriate computational procedures such as selecting and applying algorithms for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Benchmarks Students will be able to: Recall the basic facts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with addends and factors of whole numbers 0-10. B.8.2a Perform and explain operations on rational numbers (add, subtract, multiply, divide) raise to a power, take opposites and reciprocals, determine absolute value. Benchmarks Students will be able to: Add, subtract, and multiply whole numbers without a calculator. Divide whole numbers by single digit divisors without a calculator. Big Ideas: Students with fluency with the basic math facts are better able to understand new concepts apply them in a timely manner. Key Concepts: addition and subtraction facts from 1-10, multiplication and division facts from 1-12 Skills, Knowledge, and Vocabulary to Understand the content: sight facts = knowing the fact within 3 seconds without guessing Formative and Summative Assessments (including rubric): students will go through flash cards with the teacher while being timed, times will be graphed, proficient = less than 2 minutes for all facts for a single operation; basic = 2-3 minutes for all facts for a single operation; minimal = more than 3 minutes for a single operation Learning Activities (include performance tasks, differentiation, grouping, enrichment and reteaching, and materials): 3, 2, 1 – practice with flash cards: students go through the cards 3 times alone, 2 times with other people, and once with an adult Math Shark – hand held game that randomly reviews math facts Math Down – face to face competition to be the fastest to correctly answer math facts Desk Games – use cards or dice to randomly combine numbers to add, subtract, multiply, or divide alone or as competition with others Math Fact CD’s – use of music to review and practice math facts Websites: o http://home.indy.rr.com/lrobinson/mathfacts/mathfacts.html o http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/Mathmagician/mathsmulti.html o http://www.aplusmath.com/Flashcards o http://www.aplusmath.com/games/matho o http://www.aplusmath.com/games/picture o http://www.aplusmath.com/Flashcards/index.html o http://www.playkidsgames.com/games/mathfact/mathFact.htm o http://www.funbrain.com/math/ o http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/SumSense o http://www.mathmastery.com/cyberchallenge/
