Department of XXXX Lab Safety Coordinator Duties - 2011

Each laboratory or group has a safety coordinator selected by the PI or supervisor.
The safety coordinator is responsible for:
1. Implementing the safety program for the group
2. Attending department safety meetings
3. Disseminating all safety information to the PI and the group
Implementing the lab safety program
Read the Laboratory Safety Manual. Everything you need to know is in the notebook. This
includes the IIPP.
Complete the Lab Hazard Assessment Tool annually.
Prepare Laboratory Specific Training document and update annually.
Prepare Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and/or Job Safety Analyses (JSAs). Update
annually.
Practice and document emergency evacuation procedures annually.
Maintain chemical inventory and update annually. Chemical inventory must be updated
annually and include chemical name, storage location, quantity, and type of hazard.
Establish safety training records for everyone in your group. Refer to list below.

Written records must be maintained.
Annual training is defined as once per calendar year.
Document Personal Protection Equipment training annually.
Document Laboratory Specific training annually.
Inspect lab areas twice per year. Correct deficiencies.
Inspect office areas once per year. Correct deficiencies.
Maintain Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) printouts of all items on chemical inventory list
with an index. MSDS compendium must be updated annually. The link to the online MSDS
