Bio 40 RECESSIVE DELETERIOUS GENE CONDITIONS Heredity Lesson 7 MOST (not all) deleterious genes are recessive traits. Heterozygous people for the trait are carriers but are not afflicted by the condition. Alkaptonuria Cystic fibrosis Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy Hemophilia Lesch-Nyhan syndrome PKU Sickle cell anemia Tay Sachs Adenoleukodystrophy (ALD) Alper’s syndrome Zellweger’s syndrome Aarskog syndrome DOMINANT DELETERIOUS GENE CONDITIONS Some deleterious genes are dominant. Heterozygous people for the trait exhibit the condition. Brachydactyly Congenital stationary night blindness Fascio-scapulo-humeral muscular dystrophy Huntington’s disease Pseudo-achondrophastic dwarfism NF-1 (Neurofibromatosis type 1) Marfan syndrome Machado-Joseph disease Bio 40 Heredity Lesson 7 PROJECT Poster: Precious Humans Select one of the conditions listed to do further research with a partner (in diads). You may choose a disorder not listed but it must fit these criteria before you check with your teacher: o Must be inheritable as recessive or dominant gene o Deleterious condition (colourblindness does not fit this criterion) Projects with some uncertainty MAY be permitted—eg. Breast cancer runs in families, but the recessive/dominance is not clear. The genes that pass on are becoming known. No two groups may do the same project. Sign up list with your teacher. Two classes of time: one computer day, one work day. Include : Title of the disorder. /25 mk total Should occupy not more than 1/6 and not less than 1/8 of the poster page. (1) Picture(s) showing a person with the condition if possible, or a diagram that shows some of the characteristics. (2) Description of the condition and life with the condition (diagnosis, symptoms, prognosis, treatments and current research—ie known gene and effects) (12) Punnett square showing how the trait arises (2) Probability in the population (Canada/US/Global--specify) (2) State if it is culturally prevalent or not. Research further to determine location of prevalence. (3) 3 mk are included for aesthetics—no extraneous marks, very neat, eyeappealing as an informational poster, colour, legibility at 10 feet. Photos and charts off the computer are permitted. Anecdotal stories may be printed off as well but count only for part of the life description—cite these directly on the print out. Other information should not be cut/paste of the internet sites—that is plagiarism. All information is to be neat and hand printed. Printing should be legible at 10 feet. Cite all your sources on a separate sheet of paper. Include your name and partner’s name along with the title. Your name and partner’s name are on the front lower right corner.
