My mission is to work with young individuals in gaining confidence, achieving a more optimistic paradigm, and realizing their ability to help others- ultimately shaping a more altruistic and empathetic future.

Sunshine OV: orientation volunteers

The roles of Orientation Volunteers are to help introduce new students to the academic, social and cultural life at the University of Guelph. This year I was part of the Sunshine Team (Central

OV). My team was responsible for supporting all Ovs throughout the Orientation week to maintain their physical and mental well-being. We provided guidance, direction and assistance to the Ovs and enhanced overall motivation of all volunteers. We spread cheers throughout the campus and helped the volunteers feel recognized for their hard work. We also welcomed new students to better prepare their transition to University of Guelph.

Growing up I was always greatly interested in animals- especially in dogs and horses. My parents loved taking care of animals so my house was always filled with pets, and as I have entered university it felt strange not having animals to work with. So I began working for the

Central Animal Facility (across the campus) as an Animal Care assistant and a volunteer dog walker. I especially loved working with my dog on tricks and on his obedience, so I applied to the Canadian Lion Foundation as a dog handler. Basically, I was given a dog to take care of and train for a year, and if the dog passes his exams he becomes certified as a dog guide for various disabilities. My dog Quark was a small miniature poodle and was trained for disabilities such as deafness and as a seizure-response dog. I learnt that we can combine things we are passionate for and enjoy, with volunteer works that can potentially help others greatly.

I believe that travelling helps individuals become more culturally sensitive and more openminded when understanding other parts of the world and its people. It helps young individuals grow pondering about a subject on a bigger, more world-wide scale.

Reflection on how I see myself fitting into broader community efforts to make positive change

As a post-secondary student at the University of Guelph, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to experience variety work fields. I got to meet and work with people of different age, ethnic and social groups and by doing so became more aware of my God-given intuitive abilities to influence and guide others. My program of Arts and Sciences has exposed me to many different and diverse subject areas, which I believe are essential in developing an individual in becoming more versatile and well-rounded. Currently I see myself fit into broader community efforts to make positive change by influencing others in gaining confidence in order to identify, pursue and achieve their goals in life. Individuals should be steered to actions which help them achieve happiness, fulfillment and value in living. Having been college representative for college governments, and working as a facilitator for various institutions, I am more confident in myself that I have the power to make changes in my community. Personally, the moments that I found to be most fulfilling were when I helped people in need, thereby taking away their fear and sense of helplessness. I want to help people embrace their individuality and to enjoy life by seeing the world in a more optimistic way.
