_____2. What is the Florida state freshwater fish and what does it eat? Hint: There is a picture of
one in the Exhibit Hall.
_____3. What did the Native Americans use during hunting expeditions to collect fish and wild
game for food? This was handmade out of one tree and more than 5 people may have
used this at one time during their hunting trips. Hint: it is really long and located in the
Nature Center.
_____4. What mammal lives in a den and is mostly nocturnal, eats rodents, rabbits, eggs, berries and
fruit? Hint: These relatives of the domesticated dog are very shy so you’ll have to go into the
dark
to get a picture of this mom and pup.
_____5. Which habitat is higher in elevation, scrub or swamp? Hint: Elevation goes a long way in
Polk County. Even a few inches change in elevation across the land can result in entirely
different types of habitats.
_____6. Which Watershed do you live in? Hint: Visit the Watershed exhibit and ask Hydro. Take a photo
of your watershed.
_____7. Can you find and identify the tracks of these animals along the trails or in the Discovery
Center? Some are nocturnal (most active at night) and are difficult to detect their presence.

_____8. There are lots of ways to help protect the environment; one way is to recycle your plastic water
bottles. Find and photograph a recycle logo.
_____9. During the construction of Polk’s Nature Discovery Center and Circle B Bar Reserve, many

where made using eco friendly construction materials. Hint: Visit the kiosk between the parking
lots to find – (a) A trail that is made with recycled tires called Flexipave (look for the “Trail Starts
Here” sign), and (b) A parking area that is made from Geoblocks (look at the kiosk brochure to
find this location).

_____ 18. The temperature of an alligator’s nest determines the sex of the hatchlings. What is the
Magic temperature for making males and females? Hint: This sign is located along Alligator Alley
and Heron Hideout.
_____ 19. Find the “Plants of Circle B Bar Reserve” sign. Receive points for the sign and additional 10
Points for each photo of a plant listed on the sign. Hint: located on Heron Hideout.
_____ 20. Dragonflies spend the majority of their lives in water (3-7 years), and as little as 2 weeks on
land. Photograph a dragonfly.

_____23. The Circle B Bar Reserve property was once a working cattle ranch, find and photograph an
Item that was here during the cattle ranch days. Hint: cattle pens, water trough, wind mill.
_____24. Find and photograph a tree that has rectangular or oval holes (cavities) made by the Pileated
Woodpecker. Fun fact: The Pileated Woodpecker is the star in the Woody Woodpecker cartoon.
_____25. What are the roles of the storm water ponds? Find “Wetlands are Filters” kiosk for this answer.
Hint: Sign located on the Shady Oaks Trail. Additional 10 points for a photo of a storm water
pond.
_____26. Hug a Tree! Trees are a valuable resource for our earth. Take a photo of your group hugging
A tree.
_____27. Find and photograph the “Butterflies of Circle B Reserve” kiosk. Receive additional 10 points
For each photo of a butterfly listed on the sign. Hint: Sign located on Shady Oaks Trail
_____28. Bald Cypress Trees live in the wetlands. Find and photograph a Bald Cypress Tree.
Fun Fact: The Cypress tree seeds do not germinate underwater and these trees have “knees”.
_____29. The Florida State tree is the Cabbage Palm. Find and photograph a Cabbage Palm. Fun fact:
Swamp Cabbage is a food made from this tree.
_____30. Insects come in almost every color of the rainbow. Take a photo of the insects of each color –
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white, pink (receive 25 points each)
_____31. What is the average depth of Lake Hancock? Hint: Find the “Getting to Know Lake Hancock”

_____32. Take a group shot on the Observation Dock. Challenge: All team members must be in the
picture.
_____33. Poison Ivy can be found as a trailing vine, as a shrub and as a climbing vine that grows on
trees. Find and photograph poison ivy. Hint: look along the Lake Hancock monitoring dock.
Fact: Leaves in three, Let it be. Poison Ivy can cause a severe skin rash on most people.
