Secretary of Education Names Metro Catholic School as a 2014 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School April 22, 2014 Acting Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality Mike Boots joined U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to announce that Metro Catholic School, in Cleveland, Ohio is among the 2014 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award honorees. Metro Catholic is a preschool through Gr. 8 school of the Diocese of Cleveland. The school serves 550 students on two campuses in the Stockyard and Detroit Shoreway Neighborhoods. Metro Catholic School was nominated by the Ohio Department of Education for the Green Ribbon School recognition. The award recognition especially noted “care of Earth” strands throughout the curriculum, the use of land bank space to create more green learning space and student/staff trainings in sustainable practices, especially the “Awakening the Dreamer” program. Metro Catholic School Director, Sr. Anne Maline, SND said, “Our religious tradition of caring for the world and people has motivated us for years to teach students to become socially aware, environmentally sensitive, spiritually connected to Earth and educated in sustainable practices. We appreciate the Green Ribbon School recognition from the U.S. Department of Education.” Forty-eight schools were honored for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education, including civics and green career pathways. The schools were confirmed from a pool of candidates voluntarily nominated by 30 state education agencies. The list of selectees includes 39 public schools and nine private schools.
