Aldeburgh Young Musicians
Background information
Aldeburgh Music has an international reputation for delivering training and development
for artists at every stage of their career at the very highest level. It attracts performers,
tutors and participants of a high calibre and competition for places is fierce.
Aldeburgh Young Musicians sits within Aldeburgh’s main artist development and
performance programme and is well integrated within the organisation. This ensures
opportunities for feeding into, and using the resources of, Aldeburgh’s other artistic
programmes, including the very best tutors and artists. It is envisaged that several of the
young musicians may one day become part of the Britten–Pears Young Artist
Programme.
Following a number of years of research and development, Aldeburgh Young
Musicians was fully launched in 2008. Aldeburgh Music’s Centre for Advanced Training
(CAT) caters primarily for young people from Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, but
also from further afield.
AYM provides a combination of intensive residential courses, long weekends, mentoring
and performance opportunities to exceptionally talented young musicians. This model
enables students to receive high quality training whilst living at home and continuing to
benefit from, and feed back into, the existing musical activities in their local areas. The
scheme provides a progressive training programme of an equivalent level and quality to
other CATs, existing specialist music boarding schools and junior conservatoires, but is
delivered in a way which is integrated with local provision. Opportunities are also open
to students who already attend one of the National CATs, as Aldeburgh’s model is
unique and can complement and enhance their individual programme of learning
wherever they learn.
Aldeburgh Young Musicians fulfills three roles:
 Co-ordinating knowledge and advice – a signposting role or ‘clearing house’
for potentially talented and exceptionally gifted young people
 Providing specialist residential courses throughout the year (mostly in the
holidays and occasional term-time weekends) for talented musicians
 Giving young people of exceptional musical potential the chance to work with
professional artists.
Aldeburgh Young Musicians works in partnership with a number of leading music
education and performance organisations in the eastern region: the three county music
services of Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, together with specialists Pro Corda, the
Junior Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Britten Sinfonia, and Aldeburgh Music.
Aldeburgh Young Musicians aims to:
 provide improved access for talented young people to specialist training,
connecting them with leading performers and teachers
 create a means of addressing artistic needs, developing inquisitive, creative and
versatile musicians
 reach some of the top talent, raising the standards of Britain’s young musicians
and shaping the musicians of tomorrow as future leaders
Page 3 of 5

raise ambition in a largely rural part of the UK, so regionally the scheme is also a
pinnacle to which talented young musicians can aspire
Several factors make AYM’s approach towards creative music making distinctive from
other Centres for Advanced Training:




Each of the young musicians has a tailored Individual Learning Programme (ILP)
– bespoke to their individual needs.
AYM is less about formal teaching and more about a collaborative approach that
encourages experimentation and exploring new ways of working, including
creating new music and in different styles.
The young musicians rub shoulders with professionals, working together as
equals, rather than in a more traditional teacher/student setting. Many of the
professional artists subsequently develop a mentoring relationship, offering
guidance and advice and in some cases, more formalised regular tuition
AYM works with musicians of any musical discipline, offering unique
opportunities and access to non-traditional musical routes
