Earth has Several Layers
Please fill out the chart completely. You do not need to write in full sentences, however, your
notes should be legible so that you understand them. DO NOT write exactly what the book
says. You must write your notes using your voice if you wish to receive full credit.
MAIN IDEA
SUPPORTING FACTS
-Earth is about 4.6 billion years old and
formed as bits of material collided and
stuck together.
-More dense materials (iron and nickel)
Earth is made up of materials sank towards the center of the Earth.
Less dense materials moved towards the
with different densities.
surface.
-Earth’s main layers: the core, the
mantle, and the crust.
-Is a ball of hot, solid metal.
-Located at the center of the Earth and is
Inner core
under enormous pressure.
-A layer of liquid metals that surrounds
the inner core.
Outer core
-Lower temp than the inner core.
-Earth’s thickest layer.
-Made out of hot rock. Top part is cool
and rigid- just below hot and soft like a
Mantle
thick paste.
Crust
-Thin layer of cool rock.
-Made up of two parts:
-Continental- includes all continents
and some islands (thicker)
-Oceanic- all ocean floors (thinner)
-The crust if home to all life on Earth.
Lithosphere
Asthenosphere
Tectonic plates
-Sits on top of the asthenosphere,
includes the Earth’s crust and very top of
the mantle.
-The most rigid of all layers
-“Litho” means stone or rock
-A layer of hotter, softer rock in the
upper mantle.
-Flows like hot tar.
-“Asthenes” means weak, however, the
layer is not actually weak.
-Many large and small slabs of rock
from the lithosphere.
-Fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.
-Analogy between a hard-boiled egg and
tectonic plates.
