COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: To develop an understanding and appreciation of literary masterpieces of the world, to explore major literary periods, to explore influences of culture upon literature and vice versa and to recognize the contribution of a diverse body of literature upon Western Civilization. To develop the skill to respond critically to each literary selection and to apply explication and analysis to the works discussed. LATE WORK: Homework assignments, presentations, papers are due the day they are assigned; excused absences are the only exception. A computer problem is not an acceptable excuse for a paper or presentation not being completed by the due date as these larger projects usually have several days/weeks notice. This is sufficient time to get started, save drafts to a jump drive, save on the school server, print out drafts, e-mail drafts, etc. In case of a computer problem, a working draft must be presented and will be graded as a final draft or it will be subject to the late penalty (see below). Papers handed in late are subject to the penalty of one letter grade a day. 1 day late, B; 2 days late, C . . . Make-Up Work: It is the responsibility of the student to find out what work was missed following an excused absence. For smaller assignments the students will have two extra school days to complete the work; larger assignments will be due according to the number of days missed and the nature of the project at the instructor’s discretion. GRADE WEIGHT: For each quarter and semester grades, the points are converted to the following 1/3 Daily Work percentages: 94-100 A 1/3 Tests, Quizzes 93-91 A89-90 B+ 1/3 Presentations, Projects 87-88 B Writing Assignments 85-86 B83-84 C+ 80-82 C 77-79 C74-76 D+ 70-73 D 69 D0-68 F Extra Credit: It is expected that students will complete all of their work on time with full effort. Therefore if extra-credit is given it will not serve the purpose of replacing an assignment that was late or poorly done. Extra- credit will be given by the instructor’s discretion in situations where intellectual curiosity is to be rewarded. Academic Integrity Policy Student Contract Homework, tests, papers, and projects are all assigned with one end in mind, namely to increase your competence in the discipline of English. For this among other reasons, use of somebody else's homework, test answers, or paper projects (plagiarism) is a matter of serious consequence. When in doubt consult your student handbook and give credit to authors. Never give or loan your work to another student unless your teacher is aware of it or has instructed you that a given assignment may be done with a partner. Avoid consulting the internet (especially cites like Spark Notes and Classic Notes) or Cliff’s Notes unless instructed by your teacher. Occasionally these materials are supplements designed to help students facing difficult and challenging readings but these materials do not replace doing the reading. As students you should be seeking opportunities to challenge yourself and not trying to take the short cut or avoid doing the reading. If you use these materials it is dishonest not to acknowledge them within your work. Turnitin.com will be used to check for plagiarism. Consequences: A student who is found to be cheating or plagiarizing will meet with an Academic Administrator. In addition, as your teacher, I maintain the right 1) to reduce a grade or to give an "F" or "O" 2) to notify parents of the cheating and its consequences --------------------------------------------------------I have read this syllabus and am aware of the expectations of World Literature and agree to follow the Academic Integrity Policy.
