CAREER SUMMARY AND ACHIEVEMENTS TO DATE
Freelance Medical Statistician
“Halcyon”, Thornton, Leicester
January 2014 – present

I am currently collaborating in the writing of an encyclopoedia for Medical Statistics, in between
working on projects on which my help has been sought.
July 2010 - present

In July 2010 the “SCoPE” Project (* below) was paused and I started a period of working from home as
a Freelance Medical Statistician (** below) and of being the house husband, supporting my two sons
and my wife.
September 2006-April 2009

Over this period I worked as a consulting Medical Statistician for Professor A.H. Gershlick and with
Professor K.R. Abrams on the SCoPE Project (*). This is a very interesting project: “Scoring for
Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Events”. At times I worked with three doctors as well as Professors
Gershlick and Abrams, and this led to the publication of three abstracts and one poster (see below), but
the main project was paused in April 2009 at the analytic stage (I handed it over to the department’s
statistician in July 2010.)
October 2001-present

In October 2001 I began working with Margaret Hidderley, a Macmillan Nurse Specialist employed by
Southern Derbyshire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust on the effects of Autogenic Training (AT):
http://www.autogenic-therapy.org.uk/ ) on the outcomes for ladies with early stage breast cancer. AT is
often referred to as “westernised meditation”; a form of self-hypnosis. As well as relieving anxiety in
these ladies, the pilot study suggested that AT improved immune system responses and general wellbeing, and led to a paper being published summarising the pilot study (** below). The paper was in the
top 10 downloaded papers for its quarter, and led to presentations at 7 National Conferences, and to
Margaret Hidderley being nominated for the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade Awards 2002 and receiving
finalist status. The pilot study strongly supports the need for a full-scale study and we have been
actively pursuing funding to do this. We tried the NHS (Research for Patients Benefit) and have tried
local bodies such as JCB. We still pursue funding.
March 2005-present

In March 2005 I founded the mailing list “MedStats” and I am most proud of this achievement
( http://groups.google.com/group/MedStats ) .This list promotes open discussions on statistical issues
raised by anyone who chooses to join. It is open to view by anyone on the internet but to post a question
or to contribute to the discussion one must join. The members include many of the most famous Medical
Statisticians and number 1362 members. My main rule is that there should be no flaming: to protect

newcomers from acerbic comments and to deter unreasonable behaviour. I am active in contributing too
the discussions. The archives of MedStats are open to members, cover many interesting topics and are
an exceptional contribution to the world of Medical Statistics.
July 2008 – Present

In July 2008 I replied to an advertisement from J. Golson Media (USA) looking for authors to write
sections of “The Encyclopoedia of Mathematics and Society”. I successfully submitted a number of
articles. I have recently taken this up again. I am also currently co-authoring a 1000 page long
Encyclopoedia in Medical Statistics. This is very much a labour of love, but we make good progress.
July 2005 - July 2006

I have also worked as a Medical Writer for Framingham BV, writing abstracts for papers. Framingham
collated and published these abstracts and then sent them on to clinicians who welcomed them: they
provided an overview of research in key areas of interest. Thus the abstracts that I wrote had to be wellwritten.
July 2006 – December 2006

I tutored an undergraduate psychologist in Medical Statistics. I enjoyed working with her, getting the
most of the learning process.
July 2006 – December 2006

In December 2006 I completed a NCFE course in Access Auditing for Disabled People (NQF Level
Equivalence: 3). I could then, in my spare time, work with the Leicestershire Centre for Integrated
Living (LCIL) to visit buildings as requested to check for suitable access arrangements. I am a Trustee
on the Board for LCIL.
July 2002 – July 2003

Over this time I worked at the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU) as the chief statistician for the
National Acute Myeloid Leukaemia Clinical Trial 15. This led to 2 abstracts being published.
September 2000 – June 2002

From September 2000 until I moved to BCTU I was the Medical Statistician at the Southern Derbyshire
Acute Hospitals Trust, helping researchers at the two hospitals: Derby City and the Royal. Anyone
doing research, a nurse or consultant, could approach me for help. In addition, I ran two training
sessions, each 7 hours long, again targeted at a broad audience. I have a number of papers from my time
there, including one published in the high impact journal, “Heart” (Harrop, et al).

September 1999 – October 2000


I gained a distinction in the summer project of an Advanced MSc in “Medical Statistics and Information
Technology” at Leicester/De Montfort universities in October, 2000. I also won the Diane Jackson
Memorial Prize for services rendered in support of the Health Service.
1996
In 1996 I took the Open University M101 Maths Foundation course, scoring 88%.
July 1983 – July 1999
Before adopting a career in Medical Statistics I worked as the Quality Manager in Betts (supplier to
Pharmaceutical Companies, July 1997 - July 1999) and in a number of Clinical Diagnostics companies
(September 1983 – July 1994): Amersham International, Kodak Clinical Diagnostics, Johnson & Johnson,
EURO DPC. I managed validation projects (Installation Qualification, Operational Qualification and
Performance Qualification) and the introduction of projects into the company from customers or from the main
site into the company. I managed the company’s quality systems through three FDA inspections, ensured that
the company succeeded in ISO9001 audits and that the company met the quality standards required from our
customers. At EURO-DPC I recruited and managed 17 staff. My earliest experience was as a Project Manager
and troubleshooter. The constant theme throughout all of my work has been that I succeed in problem-solving (I
joined MENSA for their puzzles). The positions I have had made good use of continuous improvement and of
instilling and enacting that philosophy in the company. I have been responsible throughout in addressing
customer complaints.
I am a Parish Councillor to Bagworth and Thornton Parish Council. I am a governor at my sons’ academies. I
founded the School Bridge Club, and represented school at rugby, badminton and bridge. I came 8th in the
country in GCE Latin ‘O’ Level and achieved 12 GCE ‘O’ Levels of which 9 were Grade A. My ‘A’ levels
were in Biology, Physics and Chemistry, all Grade A’s, and at Special Level I achieved a Distinction in
Chemistry and a Merit in Biology. After a Gap Year I studied Medicine at Bristol University for one year when
I changed to a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry: I gained a (2i).
I am a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. I enjoy rambling, photography and eating out with my family. I
have a wide taste in music, from my father’s generation to keeping up with my sons’.
