THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES:
RADIO THEATRE
By Arthur Conan Doyle
Adapted for stage by Simon Williams
THEATRO TECHNIS, MON 15 TH – SAT 20 TH August 2011
PRESS PERFORMANCE: TUESDAY 16 TH AUGUST, 7.30PM
Veni Vidi Theatre Company by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Limited presents Sherlock Holmes’
greatest mystery The Hound Of The Baskervilles in a new ‘radio theatre’ format. Adapted for stage by
Simon Williams and directed by Natalie-Anne Downs, the production runs at Theatro Technis this August.
Inspired by the infamous radio broadcasts of Orson Welles’ Mercury Theatre Company of the late 1930’s, a
small company of actors will bring to life a multitude of characters whilst using an array of sound foley
props, to produce every sound effect live on stage.
This new re-imaging by Natalie-Anne Downs will be a re-enactment of what live radio broadcasts may have
been like. Audiences will be invited to engross themselves completely in this radio theatre experience, as
they are taken back to 1930’s England and watch a collective of recording artists who have come in to the
studio to record a thrilling version of The Hound Of The Baskervilles for its listeners. Originally serialised in the Strand Magazine from 1901 to 1902, The Hound Of The Baskervilles is
one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous mysteries of featuring his enduring detective, Sherlock Holmes.
Set mainly on Dartmoor, in England’s West Country, it tells of Holmes and Watson’s investigation on the
Baskerville curse of a fearsome diabolical hound that haunts the family. But as they delve deeper into the
mystery, they begin suspect the life of the last remaining heir is also in peril and it becomes a race against
time to save him from the fate of his ancestors.
Sim on W illiam s was born in Windsor 1964. As well as being a playwright and a novelist, he is also well
known actor appearing in many notable stage productions and television dramas and is best known for
playing Captain James Bellamy in television series Upstairs, Downstairs. Some of previous credits include:
Bad Girls, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Dalziel and Pascoe, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Heartbeat, Merlin,
Cutting It, Bergerac, Family Affairs and Holby City.
Both his novels Talking Oscars and Kill the lights have featured on the bestseller lists. With his stage
adaptation of The Hound Of The Baskervilles, his other plays include: Double Death, Boys Will Be Boys,
Nobody’s Perfect and Kiss My Aunt. He is presently the co-chairman of the Actors’ Charitable Trust.
