Randall Dumont
Chemistry & Chemical Biology
In 1981, Randy Dumont obtained his B.Sc. in Applied Mathematics and Chemistry, at the University of Western
Ontario. In 1986, he completed his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics Theory, at the University of Toronto. He went on to an
NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at Columbia University, and became an Assistant Professor at McMaster in January,
1988. His early research was primarily concerned with the classical statistical theory of unimolecular reactions. He
later worked on efficient numerical methods for computing the time evolution of quantum systems. These studies
include the simulation of nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and atom-diatom reaction dynamics. Perhaps the
most notable contributions in this period are papers published in 1993 and (two) in 2002 which characterize the
distribution of tunneling times for a particle tunneling through a barrier, and describe the quantum speedup effect
wherein a particle emerges from a barrier with (sometimes significantly) greater velocity. His most recent research
is concerned with the simulation of current flow through molecular wires. During this time, Randy Dumont has
taught many courses. He has taught first term General Chemistry sixteen times, and the
Physical Chemistry of Materials ten times. Teaching first year chemistry lead to development
of a chemistry demonstration show that he has performed for high school students two to
five times a year over the last ten years. His interest in education has most recently lead to
textbook writing. He is using his own textbook, "An Emergent Reality Part I:
Thermodynamics" in his level two Thermodynamics course for Integrated Science students.
He has also written part I of a concise General Chemistry text, and is currently working on
the second parts of both of these projects.
Randy Dumont loves jazz music, especially bossa nova. He is particularly fond of jazz
vocals, and often sings along with his favorite songs. He attends local jazz shows, and
supports the many talented local jazz vocalists. He enjoys canoeing and swimming in
Georgian Bay and neighboring lakes, and the sun and sand of the Caribbean. In addition,
he enjoys reading science books and articles, in any field, but especially likes to keep
up-to-date with big picture science questions such as the origins of universe and of life.
Marsha Duncan

years, she was hired on full time as Receptionist for the Records section of the Office of the Registrar by
the very tall and very Irish Associate Registrar, Mr. Jim Walker – “D-Day” (June 6), 1988. Her time
working in the Office of the Registrar lasted for 12 years, completing career growths in Accounts
Receivables and Payables. She held a position as Graduate Secretary in the Department of Mechanical
Engineering for close to three years after that. Missing administration, she applied to her current
Student Records Clerk position in the School of Graduate Studies in 2003. Marsha has met some
wonderful people and has been taught and mentored by some very strong, bright individuals like Helen
Barton, Laurel Stuart, Marion Welton, Diane Waterfield, Nancy Brooks, Betty Bedell-Ryc, John Scime,
and Julie Birch to name a few.
Marsha enjoys being with family, friends; walking; playing sports –
especially baseball; and she loves her pets - like her cat - "Lucy"
- who is pictured with her here. She feels blessed to be working at
McMaster. It has been the one true constant in her life. It gave her
the opportunity to finish her Honours B.A., Political Science;

Bonnie Murphy
Biochemistry & Biomedical Sciences
Bonnie joined the Department of Biochemistry & Biomedical Sciences in support of the Department Chair.
She immediately enrolled in the Honours English program at McMaster in September 1988, completing her
degree in 2002, Summa Cum Laude. In 2008 she became Manager, Strategy & Planning. This position entails
managing all operating and research funds and plays a core role in planning and development of
Department initiatives such as the new Biomedical Discovery & Commercialization Program, currently
under review by the Ministry of Education. In 2012, Bonnie enrolled in the Washington State University
Executive MBA program, entering into her thesis defense first in her class in January 2014. A strong believer
in life-long learning, she loves being surrounded by world-class scientists, who are always game to give her
the layman’s version of their cutting-edge health research progress.
She is a landscape designer, painter, writer and guitar player who loves to
throw theme parties for her friends and goes all out in her Halloween
extravaganzas at the office. Bonnie and her partner, Rick, moved to the
shores of Lake Erie several years ago and share their life with a feisty and
lovable 25 pound Maine Coon cat named Bluesy.
Sue Murray
Family Medicine
Sue Murray started her career providing temporary admin support in the Department of Biochemistry
working with Dale Tomlinson and Dr. Hara Gosh. At the completion of that short-term contract, she
moved over to the Program in Occupational Health and Environmental Medicine working for Dr. Muir
for one year. She started in Central Animal Facilities as Dept Secretary and moved to Admin Manager
staying there for 21 years. She feels lucky enough to have been in the inaugural group of McMaster's
Certificate in Advanced Leadership and Management course (CALM). During that year, her group did a
module on Labour Relations and touched on behavioural interviewing. This led to her application for a
job to gain the experience of being on the other side of the table. After meeting over a number of
interviews with key leadership in Family Medicine, learning about the department and becoming
increasingly intrigued with their mission and goals, she met the Chair, Dr. David Price. They had a great
talk about leadership and Sue came to learn that he leads from the back of the boat.
He doesn't tell you how fast to paddle or how long your oar needs to be, he trusts in
your abilities and just lets you know where he wants the boat to go. Sue was thrilled
to be offered the position of Manager of Education and have been there for the last
four years. Sue is so proud to have worked in two great Departments in her time
here at McMaster.
Sue enjoy spending time with her husband (who she met at McMaster. He was a
student in Biochemistry when she was working there. He went on to graduate with a PhD from
Biochemistry and we have been together for 24 years). They are entering into the
"empty nester" stage with both of their sons away at University (one at McGill
running with the Varsity track team taking biomedical science and one with a
varsity scholarship for volleyball at Memorial studying Psychology). In addition to
travelling, she enjoys playing volleyball, music and reading.

Tim Nolan
Student Accessibility Services
Tim joined McMaster on November 21, 1988. Tim has worked his entire McMaster career in disability services providing support
and guidance around academic accommodations to students and supporting the entire McMaster community in the process. Tim
has worked extensively with members across the McMaster community in an effort to build an accessible environment for students
and other persons with disabilities. This is both within and outside the classroom. He spent many years working one – on – one
with students providing academic accommodation and other supports as students worked their way through their studies. He has
also worked with faculty and staff on policy, program, service and accessibility issues; within and across Faculties, programs, and
student or administrative services. Tim moved into the role of Manager of disability services in 2005 and most recently became
Director of Student Accessibility Services in 2013. Tim is most fortunate to be a part of a very dedicated team of professionals
providing support to students with disabilities. And, for a brief 8 months in 2008 Tim was McMaster's Acting Director of Human
Rights and Equity Services. Tim has been active in promoting accessibility beyond the McMaster borders. He has been a member of
many boards and committees at the City, provincial, and national levels. He has been a member of the City of Hamilton’s Advisory
Committee for persons with Disabilities, a member of various not-for-profit boards including Community Living, the Hamilton East
Kiwanis Boy’s and Girl’s Club, CNIB, Canadian Hearing Society, WorkAble Services, and the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion
among others. Tim has served on the executive of the province’s university disability services committee, an MTCU alternate
format transcription committee, and the province of Ontario’s AODA Transportation Standards Development Committee,
Tim is married to the most pleasant and precious Kim and has two children; Lauren and
Christopher. The children have grown and created a life for themselves which leads him
and Kim into a new phase of the life cycle when Lauren gives birth to the first grandchild
in later February. Student relationships and family surround Tim as you can find in Tim’s
office; the myriad of home-made crafts and other memorabilia from both his children
and from his work with students including a clock in tribute to one former student that is
forever set at 12:32. Tim cannot wait for the day when he can spend time with his
grandchild making pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving and Great-Grandpa’s Christmas cake
making in December while listening to Nat King Cole roast chestnuts over an open fire,
watching the Grinch steal the season and Charlie Brown learn true meaning. There is still
much to be accomplished in terms of access and Tim is hopeful that he can see more
change on campus in the next few years and that he can see all back here again in
another 25 years!!
