Psychology and to practitioners interested in the latest developments in
this important area of psychology. Those interested in the future of social

Statistics in Psychology
Explanations without Equations
Stephen Jones,
University of the West of
England, UK
‘Statistics in Psychology
offers an excellent
gentle introduction to
the area of statistics [...]
A great emphasis on
everyday examples and
actual psychological
studies makes this book
an invaluable addition
to any student’s or
lecturer’s bookshelf.’ Jean-Francois Delvenne,
University of Leeds, UK
A refreshing and much-needed introduction to
statistics in psychology for students who ‘don’t get
numbers’. Jones breaks from the traditional, numerical
approaches, drawing on non-numerical examples
and scenarios from both psychological literature and
everyday life to explain key statistical concepts. This is
an ideal companion to core textbooks.
Concepts and Connections
Michael Passer, University of Washington, USA
Worth Publishers - A Macmillan Higher Education Company
‘The writing style is exactly what I look for in a text. Clear, succinct
sentences and a good vocabulary level. It is formal enough to be taken
seriously, but not so formal as to be dry or boring.’ - Rachael Robnett,
University of California, Santa Cruz, USA
Research Methods: Concepts and Connections offers students clear and
compelling explanations and examples drawn from cutting-edge research
from across the subfields of psychology.
Author Michael Passer is a long-time teacher of the Research Methods

unparalleled understanding of behavioural research practice in today’s world
and how those skills apply to everyday life. Passer approaches Critical Thinking throughout the textbook
in a number of ways, including “Thinking Critically and Applying Your Knowledge” questions at the end
of each chapter to help your students apply what they have learnt. In addition, statistics is covered in a
series of modules at the back of the book.

Sensorimotor Control and Learning
Steven Yantis, Johns
Hopkins University, USA
An Introduction to the Behavioral Neuroscience of Action
Worth Publishers
- A Macmillan Higher
Education Company
James Tresilian, University of Warwick, UK
‘James Tresilian has written
the most detailed, comprehensive text in
1.1.5 REPETITIONS OF THE SAME ACTION DO NOT NECESSARILY INVOLVE
REPEATING THE SAME MOVEMENTS OR FORCES
motor control and learning
– a must for those in the field.’ - Jane Clark,
Kinesiology Department, University of Maryland, USA
It may sometimes seem that repetitions of a particular action are performed in
exactly the same way: the outcome is achieved in the same way, so the concept of
motor equivalence is not needed. However, subjective impressions of this sort are
misleading; it is always the case that different performances in a sequence of
repetitions differ from one another, even though the differences may sometimes be
quite small. This was recognized early in the study of human motor behavior, as
illustrated by the following quotation, dating from 1932:
‘A valuable new addition in a field where up-to-date and comprehensive
texts suitable for the newcomer are few and far between.’ - Kielan
Yarrow, Department of Psychology, City University London, UK
Suppose I am making a stroke in a quick game, such as tennis or
cricket … When I make the stroke I do not, as a matter of fact,
produce something absolutely new, and I never merely repeat
something old … I may think that I reproduce exactly a series of textbook movements, but demonstrably I do not.xii
Sensorimotor Control and Learning is a landmark book in the growing
multidisciplinary area of human movement science that integrates findings
from neuroscience, kinesiology and psychology to present a state-of-the-art
account of how humans carry out goal-directed actions.
One of the earliest empirical studies of this phenomenon was conducted in the 1920s
by the Russian physiologist Nicolai Bernstein, and examined repetitive hammering of a
chisel by highly skilled blacksmiths.xiii Figure 1.2 shows three consecutive frames of
someone hammering; the swing of the hammer involves movement about the
shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints. Bernstein found that the trajectory of the hammerhead was fairly consistent from one swing to the next, and led to error-free striking of
the chisel. However, movements about the individual joints were much less consistent:
different strikes in the sequence of repetitions involved different arm movements.
Thus, there was motor equivalence: the same outcome (hammer-head trajectory
and striking the chisel) was achieved using (slightly) different movements of the limb
segments each time.
The textbook features over 600 high-quality illustrations, which are also available online for lecturers.

in the field of Sensation

students understand difficult concepts.’ - Sandra

This textbook integrates classic and current research,
highlighting defining principles and experiments
of this field. Outstanding art and interactive visual
demonstrations complete this engaging text.

A natural question to ask is: how can the same movement of the hammerhead be achieved if the movements of the limbs segments are all different? It is
difficult to provide a complete answer at this point, so we will consider a simpler
example that illustrates the basic idea. Imagine a task in which a person is required to
press on a pad with the index and middle fingers of their right hand so as to produce
a target force level of 30 Newtons (Figure 1.3, panel A).xiv The person could produce
30 Newtons by pressing with a force of 10 Newtons with the index finger and 20
Newtons with the middle finger, or using any other combination that adds up to 30.
This is represented graphically in panel B of Figure 1.3. The force exerted by the index
finger is plotted on the vertical axis and the force exerted by the middle finger on the

Exploring Paranormal Belief and Experience
Charles Darwin
The Shaping of Evolutionary Thinking
Lance Workman,
Visiting Professor,
University of Wales, UK
Christopher C. French, Goldsmiths, University of London, UK and Anna
Stone, University of East London, UK
‘A balanced, authoritative, and reader-friendly guide about unusual but
poorly understood psychological phenomena. There is nothing quite like
it in the field.’ - Stanley Krippner, Ph.D., Saybrook University, USA, and
co-author, Demystifying Shamans and their World
This book examines
the history of thought
surrounding the
relationship between
Darwinism and the
behavioural sciences.
Accessible and
thought-provoking, it
demonstrates how and
why Darwinism remains
both illuminating and
controversial today.
‘Lots of people believe they have had strange experiences, such as
alien abduction or seeing heaven when near death. French and Stone,
in this meticulously researched and beautifully written book, help us
understand why. Anomalistic Psychology is a masterful, one-of-akind book that will interest anyone who cares about the sometimes
seemingly bizarre workings of the human mind.’ - Elizabeth F. Loftus,
Distinguished Professor, University of California, Irvine, USA
‘I think that students will find it an engaging and thoughtful book,
and because it contains relevant examples drawn from current cultural topics, they will find it
accessible and entertaining.’ - Nick Neave, Northumbria University, UK
From alien encounters to visions of ghosts, this introduction to anomalistic psychology explores the
fascinating area of the psychology of belief in paranormal phenomena. Co-authored by leading figures
in the field, it is an engaging and accessible textbook that considers empirical evidence from a variety of
psychological perspectives, including clinical, developmental and cognitive psychology.

Controversies in Cognitive Neuroscience
Psychology in the Brain
Integrative Cognitive Neuroscience
Scott Slotnick, Boston College, USA
‘One of the most crucial skills for university students is to learn how to
become critical consumers of scientific knowledge. This book provides
the ideal structure and support to develop their own critical evaluation
of cognitive neuroscience.’ - Deborah Hall, Director, NIHR National
Biomedical Research Unit in Hearing, Nottingham, UK
‘Controversies in Cognitive Neuroscience clearly presents ideas and
findings from the cutting edge of the field. Slotnick’s provocative style
might ruffle a few feathers, but his lively account will engage and inform
both students and researchers in numerous areas of contemporary
cognitive neuroscience.’ - Daniel L. Schacter, William R. Kenan, Jr.
Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, USA
‘This book presents a series of debates on some of the current hot
topics in Cognitive Neuroscience. It is an excellent way to spark the
enthusiasm and curiousity of students. By encouraging students to think critically about the
links between evidence and theory, Slotnick has done a great service to the field.’ - Jamie Ward,
Associate Professor, University of Sussex, UK
Providing an in-depth review of controversies and debates within cognitive neuroscience, this book

Studies in the Psychosocial
Psychosocial Studies seeks to investigate the ways in which psychic and social processes demand to be understood as always implicated in each other, as mutually constitutive, co-produced, or abstracted levels of a
single dialectical process. As such it can be understood as an interdisciplinary field in search of transdisciplinary objects of knowledge. Psychosocial Studies is also distinguished by its emphasis on affect, the irrational and
unconscious processes, often, but not necessarily, understood psychoanalytically.
Studies in the Psychosocial aims to foster the development of this field by publishing high quality and innovative monographs and edited collections. The series welcomes submissions from a range of theoretical
perspectives and disciplinary orientations, including sociology, social and critical psychology, political science, postcolonial studies, feminist studies, queer studies, management and organization studies, cultural and
media studies and psychoanalysis. However, in keeping with the inter- or transdisciplinary character of psychosocial analysis, books in the series will generally pass beyond their points of origin to generate concepts,
understandings and forms of investigation that are distinctively psychosocial in character.
