Basics

Word Processing the act of creating, editing and producing a text document

Title Bar contains the Quick Access Toolbar, the title of the document and the capability to minimize, maximize or close the program

The Ribbon area where all of the tabs are located; acts as the major organizational unit of Microsoft Word

®

Dialog Box Launcher displays the dialog box which contains all of the functions of a particular group

Scroll Bar if clicked on, will allow you to move up and down through a document

Status Bar gives you information related to the document such as page number, word count and whether or not the computer has found an error in the text

View Toolbar located on the status toolbar; regulates how the document is seen, such as print layout, Web layout, full screen reading outline form or draft form

Zoom Slider located on the status bar; allows you to move closer or farther away from the document

Overtype Tool allows you to type in text while deleting the text that follows

Home Tab consists of the clipboard, font, paragraph, styles and editing groups

Clipboard the location for anything you have cut, copied or pasted into a document

Insert Tab allows you to add various items into a document; such as pages, tables, illustrations, links to Internet sites or other documents, headers, footers, text and symbols

Page Layout Tab shows all of the options to change the theme, setup, background, paragraph and arrangement of a page

References Tab includes the Table of Contents, Footnotes, Citations & Bibliography,

Captions, Index and Table of Authorities group

Mailings Tab consists of the groups for creating envelopes and labels, starting a mail merge, writing and inserting fields and viewing the results of your actions

Mail Merge a personalized letter which is sent to multiple individuals with the only difference being the individuals’ names

Review Tab allows you to check your document for errors, add comments to a document, track changes, make changes, compare your document to the sources you used, protect the document and to regulate the changes that can be made to the document

View Tab holds the groups which affect how you see the document on the screen

Macro a series of commands or instructions you have grouped together as a single command that accomplishes a task automatically

Cursor the black blinking line located on the document

Insertion Point the location where you wish the text to begin

CTRL+S a keyboard shortcut used to save a document

Enter Key allows you to manually change lines

Word Wrapping the text’s natural ability to move to the next line when it does not fit on the current line

Print Layout View allows you to see how the document will look when it is printed while you are still typing the document

Full Screen Reading View helpful if you just want to read the document; allows you to view as much of the document as will fit on the screen at a size which is comfortable for reading

Web Layout View displays the document as it would appear on a Web browser

Outline View shows the structure of the document as levels of headings and body text; provides tools for editing and seeing the structure of the document

Draft View presents the content of a document in a simplified layout which is easy to edit and use for typing; you cannot see any headers or footers which are shown in other views

Document Map a list of headings that make up the structure of a document

Select Text to choose a portion of the text by highlighting it

Non-contiguous Selection selecting certain portions of a document without selecting the entire document; can be completed by holding down the control key while you select the portions of the document you need

Cutting this process consists of selecting an object or text and removing it from its current location, placing it on the clipboard and relocating it to another location

Copying this process allows you to select an object or text, make an exact replica of it and use it in a different location without disturbing the original selection

Drag and Drop Method a method of copying that involves selecting the text or object and then dragging it to the desired location and releasing the mouse button

Formatting the act of customizing a document to fit your needs by adjusting pieces of the document such as text, page layout and design

AutoComplete a feature that helps you quickly enter calendar terms such as the names of months and days of the week more quickly

AutoCorrect Tool works by automatically making corrections to your document; such as correcting common capitalization, spelling, grammar and typing errors

AutoFormat Feature automatically changes text entered into the correct format

Automatic Spell Check on while you are typing; points out misspelled words by placing a red squiggly line underneath them

Grammar Check proofreading tool which is automatically completed; identifies grammar problems by placing a green squiggly line underneath them

Margins the blank areas around the sides of a page

Alignment the position of the text between the margins

Indent the space between the margin and where the text begins

Hanging Indent the first line of text is not indented, but the lines beneath it are

Page Breaks the divisions between the pages of a document

Graphics include clip art, pictures, shapes, smart art, charts and word art

Smart Art graphics which show processes or lists in a visual form to aid in understanding

Template a type of document that already contains content, such as text, styles, formatting and design elements

Thesaurus Tool allows you to change your word choice by right clicking on a word and then selecting another word from the list of synonyms
