Advanced Placement Human Geography students:
Your 2014-2015 AP Human Geography Summer Assignment is now available on Mrs. Perales’ teacher
website (under my maiden name Ahlin, Anna). Please click on the 2014-2015 AP Human Geography
Summer Assignment link on the welcome page or on the left, follow the instructions below and print out
the necessary files. The completed summer assignment is due on the second day of your AP Human
Geography class. In addition to the summer assignment there will be a reading quiz and Map Quiz 1:
Physical and Human Geography on the second day your class meets after summer vacation.
Summer Assignment
1. Reading/Outline Notes/Key Terms (must be hand-written)
a. Read Chapter 1: Basic Concepts (pp. 2-43) in The Cultural Landscape: An Introduction
to Human Geography, 10th Ed. by James M. Rubenstein at least once. Take outline
notes for each section of the chapter (to help you study for your quiz). On a separate
sheet of paper from your notes please write each of the key terms and definitions for the
chapter. You may also do these on flash cards if you prefer.
b. Read Chapter 1: True Maps, False Impressions (pp. 1-14) including the Case Study: True
Maps, False Impressions in Human Geography in Action by Kuby, et al. Take outline
notes for each section of the chapter (to help you study for your quiz). On a separate
sheet of paper from your notes please write each of the key terms and definitions for the
chapter. You may also do these on flash cards if you prefer. You do not need to repeat
the key terms that you already have on your list from the Rubenstein textbook.
2. Activities
a. Complete the “Thinking Geographically” questions on p.42 of the Rubenstein textbook
on a separate sheet of paper. You may type the responses to these questions.
b. Complete Activity 1: Scale (pp. 15-20) in the Kuby textbook. DO NOT WRITE IN
THE TEXTBOOK. You may print Activity 1 from my website.
3. Maps. You will have frequent map/geography quizzes throughout the AP Human Geography
course (total of 12). To prepare for these quizzes you will asked to complete maps of the material
on which you will be quizzed. Your first Map/Geography Quiz will be on the second day of class
after your reading quiz and will be on Physical and Human Geography. You will find the
locations/features for the Physical and Human Geography quiz under the summer assignment
link. Please print and complete the blank map according to the instructions also found under the
link.
Textbooks
Students may check out The Cultural Landscape: An Introduction to Human Geography, 10th Ed. by
James Rubenstein and Human Geography in Action by Michael Kuby, et al.in the textbook room at
Heritage. Please check out the textbook in the textbook room on June 11th and 12th between 8:00am and
11:00am. Student ID is required. If you cannot pick up your textbook on either of these two days please
make an appointment by emailing Yvonne Meyer at meyery@luhsd.net.
Recap – on the second day of class you will be turning in the following items as part of your 2014 APHG
Summer Assignment:

- Rubenstein “Thinking Geographyically” questions (please type, 12pt, double-spaced)

On the second day of class you will turn in the APHG Summer Assignment items listed above, take a
reading quiz and Physical and Human Geography Map Quiz.
