Shawnigan Lake School
Academic Profile
Founded in 1916, Shawnigan Lake School is a pri-
vate, co-educational boarding school with 450 students
in Grades 8 to 12. In 2012/13 the senior (Grade 12) class
has 119 students. Most students (395) live in residence
on the school campus. Shawnigan Lake School is accredited by the British Columbia Ministry of Education and
is a member of the Canadian Association of Independent Schools, The Association of Boarding Schools, the
National Association of Independent Schools and the
Western Association of Boarding Schools.
The curriculum offered by the School is college/
university preparatory, and all students take an academic
program which qualifies them for college/university
entrance. Academic standards are demanding and the
graduating class consistently scores better than the provincial average on government examinations. In most
years, more than 95% of graduates are accepted to a 4year university, with the balance choosing other options.
The academic timetable is linear; courses begin
in September and end in June. We have three terms
of study and marking is cumulative from September
through to June, with the final mark indicating a whole
year’s work. Any marks indicated on the transcript
will be cumulative to the most recent marking period.
Grade 8, 9 and 10 students take 7 subjects; Grade 11 and
12 students normally take 5 or 6 courses per calendar
year. British Columbia Ministry of Education exams are
written in Grade 10 for English, Math and Science, in
Grade 11 for Social Studies (combined Geography and
History class) and in Grade 12 for English.
AP (Advanced Placement) courses are normally
available to students in Grade 12. If taken at an earlier
grade, permission must be sought and the courses must
fit into students’ timetables. At present, AP courses are
offered in English Literature, English Language, Calculus AB, Biology, Physics B, Physics C, Chemistry, French
Language, Spanish, U.S. History, European History,
Human Geography, Computer Science and Studio Art.
Our marking system is as follows: This marking
scheme is used by all schools in the province of British
Columbia.
A = 86 – 100% (4.0)
C+ = 67 – 72% (2.5)
C- = 50 – 59% (1.0)
B = 73 – 85% (3.0)
C = 60 – 69% (2.0)
A pass is 50%.
The province of British Columbia awards an Honours level of
study to those students achieving at 80% or better. Only the
top 3 – 5% of students in the province of British Columbia
will perform at a straight-A level.
In 2012, the final academic averages for each
grade were as follows:
Grade 12: 83.9
Grade 10: 81.0
Grade 11: 82.7
Grade 9: 79.5
Shawnigan Lake School also expects students to be
involved in a full athletic and fine arts program. All
students participate in school sports four afternoons a week
and every student must spend two afternoons pursuing
activities such as drama, music, art, community outreach or
photography. In most cases, the hourly minimum
requirements are greatly exceeded.
It is not the practice of the School to rank students, nor to
compute an official Grade Point Average. If a GPA is indicated,
it is an approximate calculation of unweighted marks from
academic classes only, using the grade point values noted above.
The determination of an official GPA is left to each university,
according to their own system.
