Walt Disney
The pioneer of animated cartoon films, Walt Disney is
famous as the creator of such cartoon characters as Mickey Mouse
and Donald Duck.
Walter Elias Disney was born on December, 5 1901 in
Chicago. His father, Elias Disney, a restless man, was a carpenter,
farmer, and building contractor. So their family moved to several
places. After his father had abandoned his efforts at farming they
moved to Kansas City, where Elias Disney bought a morning
newspaper route and compelled his young sons to assist him in
delivering papers to home subscribers in rain and shine. Walt later
said that many of the habits and compulsions of his adult life
stemmed from the disciplines and discomforts of helping his father
with the paper route.
In 1917 the Disneys moved back to Chicago. Walt entered a
High School, where he took photographs, made drawings for the
school paper, and studied cartooning on the side, for he was hopeful
of getting a job as a newspaper cartoonist. But his progress was
interrupted by World War I, in which he participated as a truck
driver for the American Red Cross in France and in Germany.
Returning to Kansas City he met Ub Iverk who turned to be
his partner throughout life. They started a small studio of their own
and began making one-and two-minute animated advertising films
for local movie-theatre programmes.
Their well-known cheerful, energetic, and mischievous
mouse called Mickey appeared in 1927. With the transition to sound
in motion pictures Disney himself provided the voice for Mickey.
The popularity of Mickey and his friend Minnie led to the invention
of other animal characters, such as Donald Duck and the dogs Pluto
and Goofy.
Gradually, the Disney studio turned into a big-business
enterprise and began to produce a variety of entertainment films.
They were among the first to foresee the potentialities of television
as a popular entertainment medium and to produce films directly for
it.
