Cal Poly Launches 2010 Adopt-A-School Program
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly Adopt-A-School Program, in its thirteenth year, is
designed to offer students in the San Luis Obispo County and Northern Santa Barbara
County the opportunity to develop a relationship with student-athlete role models from
California Polytechnic State University.
This program is not only a chance for the youth in the greater San Luis Obispo area to meet
positive role models, but also an opportunity to interact with them on a social level and learn
through first-hand experience from someone who was once in their shoes. In the classroom
and assembly settings, the student-athletes reinforce the importance of staying in school,
the value of listening and respecting authority figures, the benefits of respecting oneself,
staying focused on their dreams, staying in school, and staying away from things that may
get in the way of their goals. The youth of each school are presented with an opportunity to
ask the student-athletes questions and learn positive ways to improve both in the classroom
and on the respective fields of play.
It is the goal of the Adopt-A-School program for those same Cal Poly student-athletes to visit
the school on a regular basis in order to forge a long-term relationship with the school and
the children. The student-athletes provide camps, clinics, and/or read to the younger
students and each program varies depending upon the needs of the school and school
district.
All elementary and middle schools are invited to take part in the Adopt-A-School Program
and take advantage of this great opportunity. If your school is interested, please contact
Olivia Waldowski in the Cal Poly Athletic Department at owaldows@calpoly.edu or by calling
(805) 756-7297.
