BBC VIDEO™ COMMEMORATES GAY AND LESBIAN PRIDE MONTH WITH FOUR
ECLECTIC, HISTORIC AND POIGNANT DVDS

The Buddha of Suburbia - BAFTA-winning film adapted from the best-selling novel by
Hanif Kureish, stars Naveen Andrews (Lost, The English Patient) and features original
music by David Bowie.

Tchaikovsky - Stars Ed Stoppard (The Pianist) in a compelling 2-part dramadocumentary about the tragic life and controversial death of this musical genius.


Stonewall - The multi-award winning musical, inspired by the personal memoirs of Gay
Rights Activist Martin Duberman, relives momentous events of the 1969 Riots that
sparked the birth of the Gay Pride Movement.
BBC Video brings to DVD a quartet of inspirational releases that heroically highlight personal
journeys of four individuals in search of their true sexual identities -The Buddha of Suburbia,
Tchaikovsky, Daphne and Stonewall. Each of these dramas illustrates the universal social and
political struggle endured by the LGBT community. Arriving in stores on May 27, 2008, just in
time for Gay and Lesbian Pride Month, Tchaikovsky, Daphne, and Stonewall will be available
for the suggested retail price of $19.98 ($24.98 in Canada), and The Buddha of Suburbia will be
available for the suggested retail price of $29.98 ($37.48 in Canada). The prebook date for each

THE BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA
Adapted from the best-selling novel by Hanif Kureishi (My Beautiful Laundrette), The Buddha of
Suburbia portrays the story of the sexual and political awakening of Karim Amir (Naveen
Andrews), a teenager whose world is suddenly turned upside-down when his father becomes a
guru in the 1970s London Buddhist scene and indulges in an affair with a free-thinking neighbor.
Accompanied by original music from rock legend David Bowie, Karim’s eyes are opened to a
whole new life of drugs, experimental theatre, punk rock, wild parties and sex. This BAFTAwinning coming-of-age story is directed by Roger Michell (Notting Hill). Bonus features:
Audio commentary from writer Hanif Kureishi and Roger Michell and a David Bowie music
video.
TCHAIKOVSKY
In 1893, just nine days after conducting the premiere of what he considered to be his best work,
the Sixth Symphony ("Pathetique"), Tchaikovsky is dead. Now, 115 years later, conductor
Charles Hazelwood - one of the most prolific and dynamic musicians of his generation examines the tragic life and suspicious death of Tchaikovsky in this fascinating dramadocumentary starring Ed Stoppard (The Pianist). Tchaikovsky was filmed on location in St.
Petersburg, Russia and includes dramatic reconstructions based on the composer’s letters and
diaries and performances of some of Tchaikovsky’s best known works. Bonus feature:
Omnibus: Who Killed Tchaikovsky?, a 1993 BBC special presentation examining the controversy
surrounding Tchaikovsky’s death.
DAPHNE
In celebration of the centenary of Daphne du Maurier’s birth, Daphne explores the secret love
life of this renowned writer, best known for her novel Rebecca – the basis of the Academy
Award® winning Alfred Hitchcock film. Set just after World War II and between the Rebecca
trial and the completion of My Cousin Rachel, the story focuses on the time that Daphne du
Maurier (Geraldine Somerville) met the glamorous American heiress Ellen Doubleday,
(Elizabeth McGovern). Based on personal letters and biographies, this engaging drama focuses
on du Maurier's struggle with unrequited passion and her sexuality, and shows how this inner
turmoil influenced her writing. Bonus feature: Daphne du Maurier's Vanishing Cornwall Daphne du Maurier's vivid and highly individual film, directed by her son, illustrates and
illuminates the various attractions and sides of Cornwall. It gives a vision of Cornwall as it was
before commercialism.
STONEWALL
Stonewall is an exuberant, award-winning musical based on the real and tumultuous events of the
Gay Rights Movement. Upon its theatrical premiere at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, The Los
Angeles Times raved, “Loaded with vintage songs and carefully detailed, Stonewall…creates an
entertaining meld of fact and fantasy with a sure-fire mix of humor and pathos…” This
effervescent yet poignant program follows the life of small-town hustler Matty (Frederick
Weller, Armageddon) as he fights for equality during the Stonewall riots of 1969 in New York
City. To the accompaniment of The Shangri-Las, Patti LaBelle and Judy Garland - Stonewall
mixes outrageous lip-synching with glitter, romance and attitude.
