As you take the first step up your Stairway to the Top, ATTITUDE, you will learn the importance of having the right attitude, exactly what
attitude is and how you can develop an even better attitude! You will read stories and participate in activities that will excite you and allow
you to enjoy developing the proper outlook on life. You will learn some of the secrets of motivation and how to turn negative days into
positive days. Your life is made up of a series of choices. The primary purpose of "Building Your Winning Attitude" is to help you
understand how to make the choices that will allow you to accomplish great things all through your life!

ANALYZING MOTIVATION
Special Note: To gain maximum benefit from this activity, it should be preceded by the `ATTITUDE AND
MOTIVATION" idea on pages 58 and 59.
Objectives: • To be able to identify the different kinds of motivation
•
To develop ways to motivate more effectively
Time Required: Part I - 5-20 minutes
Part II - 10 minutes
Reports - Allow 3 minutes per report (2 minutes to speak, 1 minute to write "I Likes")
Additional Materials Required: "I Like ... Because" slips
Procedure:
1. To begin this activity lead a class discussion on Part I. Make certain the students understand the three types of
motivation.
2. Divide the class into teams of four to six people. Appoint a leader for each team. (See "Attitude" tab)
3. Read the instructions for Part II aloud. Allow the teams ten minutes for this part. After they have been working for
five minutes, announce:
"You have five minutes to finish-Five Minutes."
Then, at eight minutes, announce:
"You have two minutes to finish-Two , Minutes."
4. Have several leaders share their answers with the class for Part II_ Following each report, ask the class to write an
"I Like" for the leader.
5. End this activity by reading or paraphrasing the following:
"We need to be constantly aware of the ways we can be more effective in getting along with people.
The way we motivate others will determine our effectiveness in working with those people. Whether
working with our teachers, our peers, or our family, we are constantly having an influence on their
actions. By working through this activity, you have started designing more effective and longer lasting
methods of motivating those individuals, as well as understanding what will help you to maintain y o u r
motivation."
