Bark: The outer covering of the trunk, branches and roots that protects from fire, insects and weather. Cambium: A layer under the bark that helps the tree grow thicker. Some woody plants have an edible cambium. Coast Salish: The name of the indigenous people living along the coasts from B.C. to Oregon. Cone: The reproductive fruiting structure of conifers. This is the part of a conifer that holds seeds or pollen. Conifer: A cone-bearing plant, usually evergreen like a pine or fir. Deciduous: A plant that sheds all leaves seasonally. Ecosystem: The living community and non-living environment functioning together. Ethnobotany: The science of how people (Ethno) use plants (Botany) to survive and thrive. Evergreen: A plant that retains its leaves for more than one growing season. Exotic (Plants): Any non-native plant. Fruit: Part of a plant that contains seeds. Habitat: The community where a plant naturally grows. Herbaceous: A plant with a green soft stem that usually dies back in winter. Leaf: The flat and usually green part of a plant that makes food to feed the plant. Native (Plants): A plant that lived and thrived in a place before people introduced plants from other places. Non-Native (Plants): Plants that have been introduced by humans or animals. Potlatch: This word means “to give”. Potlatch is a celebration among a single village that invites, feeds and gives away all of their hand made belongings to neighboring villages to prove their wealth and knowledge. Plank House: Also called a Long House, these structures are made of Western Red Cedar planks. Families could live all together in these houses that could be as big as 60 feet wide and 600 feet long. Shrub: A woody plant that has several stems instead of one trunk, and is low growing. Woody Plant: A plant that can live for many years, build up a woody core and has protective bark.
