It’s your heritage: School Heritage Competition 2007 SUPPORTING NOTES WHY A COMPETITION? o The 2007 School Heritage Competition aims to raise awareness of the diversity and significance of our state’s historic heritage. o The competition is designed to encourage students to recognise, appreciate and value the historic heritage of their community and its role in creating community identity. o It also provides an opportunity for teachers and students to link school curricula to a meaningful and rewarding project. THE THEME The theme It’s your heritage is deliberately open. Many people think ‘heritage’ relates to old buildings only. Heritage can be a house built in the 60s, an industrial precinct, a railway line, a cemetery, bridge, or even a hawthorn hedge. All of these places have a history, not just in terms of architectural form, but of the people who built the structures; the community members who lived, worked or played amongst the structures; and as signposts of a community’s growth. Objects, photos and other historic artefacts are also part of our heritage with their own unique stories. Teachers may interpret the theme widely. Possible topics could be: o Identifying one or several significant local heritage places o Producing a heritage interpretation for your community o Constructing a heritage trail for your community o Explaining how a heritage place has been adapted and now has a new life o Completing stories of the people who lived and worked in the heritage places, or of the objects and the role they played in a specific historical moment o Building the competition into your current agenda. For example studies of Anzac Day could also include an investigation of monuments or honour rolls in your community. A range of ideas can be found at www.heritage.tas.gov.au/education.
