DESCRIPTION – English Philology, B.A. studies, four specializations
The Institute of English at Opole University is divided into 4 departments, i.e., Department of
Linguistics, Department of Applied Linguistics, Department of Literature and Department of
Culture of English-Speaking Countries. Our lecturers pay special care not only to their scientific
development but also to their didactic duties.
The program of studies at the Institute of English complies with the European Credit Transfer
and Accumulation System (ECTS), which offers our students a chance to participate in the
ERASMUS exchange program in such countries as Spain, Greece, the Czech Republic, Turkey and
Cyprus. Similarly, foreign students come to study at our institute.
What can you learn at English Philology?
Our students learn various issues connected with English culture, literature, and linguistics.
Generally, students develop their knowledge in the field of humanities.
Students may choose one of the following specializations:
1. English and Cultural Studies
2. English and Spanish
3. Translation Studies
4. Business English
The studies help to acquire knowledge needed to work in the area of cultural studies, in bilingual
workplaces, as a translator or in foreign companies.
All courses offered at our institute are conducted in English.
The subjects taught at out institute include:
Literature:
* history of British, Irish and American literature
* contemporary literature of English-speaking countries
* literary theory
* interpretations of literary texts
Linguistics:
*descriptive grammar of English
* historical linguistics
* contrastive linguistics
* applied linguistics
* second language acquisition
* varieties of English
* sociolinguistics
Culture:
* history and culture of Great Britain and the United States of America (including social, cultural
and political aspects)

The three-year B.A. study program includes the following groups of subjects:
* Basic subjects, i.e. Practical English
* Principal subjects (literature, linguistics)
* Specialization subjects (connected with a selected specialization)
* General subjects (philosophy, foreign language courses, physical education, variable courses)
* four weeks of internship
1) SPECIALIZATION – ENGLISH AND CULTURAL STUDIES
The aim of the specialization is to extend knowledge in the field of culture.
* Culture and contemporary world
* Methodology of cultural studies
* Media studies
* Film studies
* Digital cultures
2) SPECIALIZATION – ENGLISH AND SPANISH
The aim of the specialization is to prepare students to work in bilingual workplaces (publishing
houses, travel agencies)
The specialization subjects include:
* Practical Spanish
* Culture of Spanish-speaking countries
3) SPECIALIZATION – TRANSLATION STUDIES
The aim of the specialization is to prepare students to work as translators.
The specialization subjects include:
* Practical applications of translation theory
* Interpreting
* Translation of literary texts
* Translation of specialist texts
4) SPECIALIZATION - BUSINESS ENGLISH
The aim of the specialization is to prepare students to work in companies where the knowledge of
business English is essential.
The specialization subjects include:
* Fundamentals of economics
* Introduction to Business English
* Business communications skills
* Business English correspondence
* Business English text analysis
* Business English translation

Our students have the possibility of participating in the Erasmus exchange program, which gives a
chance to study abroad, learn foreign languages and get to know the culture of various countries.
Our students can also join LINGO – an association of English students of our institute, where they
can develop their interests and hobbies connected with English language and culture.
What can you do after completing the studies?
The specializations offered at our institute give many possibilities of working in institutions where
speaking English is essential, for example, in publishing houses, travel agencies, institutions
connected with culture and international contacts, business companies and corporations;
additionally, students may acquire basic skills connected with working as a translator or in
bilingual workplaces (English and Spanish).
Naturally, students’ creativity and willingness to continue their education may open the door to
other kinds of professional career, for instance, some of our graduates work now for Google.
After completing B.A. studies students may begin post-graduate philological studies.
The Institute of English Philology offers also the possibility of getting qualifications for teaching
English in all types of schools.
