Geology 2013
YEAR 12 - AS LEVEL
The AS level Geology course for September 2013 will be
made up of 3 units. It is an exciting course which allows the
learner to cover the following topics: Unit 1: Global Tectonics
Unit 2: Rocks: processes and products
Unit 3: Practical Skills in Geology 1
The topics covered in unit 1 are as follows:
Earth structure
Earthquakes
Continental drift, sea floor spreading and plate tectonics
Geological structures
The topics covered in unit 2 are as follows:
The rock cycle
Igneous processes and products
Sedimentary processes and products
Metamorphic processes and products
Unit 3 is a practical based project which involves:
Centre-based or fieldwork task
Evaluative task
YEAR 13 - A2 LEVEL
Entry on to the A2 level depends on the successful
completion of the AS course. This also has 3 very interesting
units as follows:
Unit 4 - Environmental Geology
Unit 5 - Evolution of life, earth and climate
Unit 6 - Practical Skills in Geology 2
Some of the topics covered are listed below:
Water supply, metallic mineral deposits, engineering
geology, formation of fossils, morphology of fossils,
fossil evidence of the evolution and mass extinctions,
dating methods, interpretation of geological maps and
changing climates.
Furthermore:
Unit 6 is another practical based project.
Career Opportunities: Geology is a qualification which can
open many doors to future careers. Many branches of
Engineering require Geology, as does, Earthquake
Management, Geological Consultancy, Earth Surveying,
Geological Mapping, Oil and Coal Exploration and many
many more,
