RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
National Institutes of Health / National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism / Laboratory of Liver Diseases :
Rockville, Maryland December *** - Present
Postdoctoral Fellow
Conducting wide-ranging experiments with animal models of both alcoholic liver disease and non-alcoholic, obesity
related liver disease to advance knowledge of the interaction of the innate immune system, cytokines, and hepatic cells in
liver diseases. Employing a variety of laboratory techniques and assays at the gene, protein, and cellular levels, including
animal models, transgenic mice, and in vitro and in vivo studies as well as procedures in murine models, including insulin
sensitivity, glucose tolerance, and oral gavage.
Recognized for outstanding performance and outcomes with selection for an oral presentation at the *** International
Symposium on Cells of the Hepatic Sinusoid.
Presented at several conferences and meetings with solid publishing record (complete listing below)
Made critical discovery demonstrating IL*** deficient mice are resistant to ethanol and high fat induced steatosis but more
susceptible to hepatic inflammation
Determined novel anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic roles of sinusoidal endothelial cell-specific-signal transducer and
activator of transcription 3 in alcoholic liver injury
Mentored students in execution of their project and instructed them how to analyze and present results.
Fully trained and certified in all Department of Health & Human Services safety and security guidelines, including animal
safety / handling and techniques for animal models of disease
University of North Carolina at Charlotte / Department of Biology
Charlotte, NC US
August *** - December ***
Graduate Research Assistantship & Teaching Assistantship
While in pursuit of a PhD, served as a core scientific contributor to the exploration into the underlying mechanisms in the
cross talk and signaling pathways of Endothelin***, a potent vasoconstrictor, and production of Thromboxane A2, an
Arachidonic Acid derived eicosanoid, in Kupffer Cells, the resident macrophages in the liver, during the early development
of fibrosis and associated portal hypertension, with or without the sequential stress of acute endotoxemia.
Research Scientist
Uncovered the hepatic stress associated with the development of portal hypertension induces significant modifications in
the receptor and intermediates of endothelin*** signaling in Kupffer cells, specifically a shift from Gq induced signaling to
Gi induced signaling in the activation of cPLA2 and production of Thromboxane A***
Supervised and mentored an undergraduate in his honors research project and associated experiments, including survival
surgeries in rodent model of fibrosis, to the achievement of 1st place for the universitys Department of Biology annual
undergraduate research competition.
Simultaneously taught laboratory classes and proctored exams in support of professor lectures on subjects including plant
biology, introductory biology, anatomy, and physiology.
Developed a reputation for effectively communicating complex biological phenomena to first-year undergraduates.
