Grade 1 and Grade 4 Lessons in e-Learning
Grade 1 lesson
A grade 1 e-Learning Lesson would contain two or more of the following activities:
1. Interactive use of a quiz created with the lesson activity toolkit on SMART Notebook software
displayed on an interactive board*.
 Examples of questions include multiple choice & note reveal.
 The questions should be linked to the subject and students should come up to the board to
answer the question.
 This could be an introductory activity to go over previous learning or a 'summing up' activity at
the end.
2. Recommend appropriate Web sites/e-Books/Articles and performing a web search.
 Perform a web search using a search engine such as Google or Bing.
 If searching for academic literature, use a specialised search engine such as Google Scholar:
http://scholar.google.co.uk/.
 Access LRC resources via Moodle and search the ebrary for e-Books or one of the many
databases available such as Oxford Reference, Britannica Online or Infotrac.
 If an interactive whiteboard is available, use it to demonstrate this activity.
 Use screen capture software such as Jing (http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html) to record your
web search and place a link to the video onto Moodle after the lesson.
 Alternatively use computers in the lesson to research a subject using the internet.
3. Students use an interactive board to construct a presentation / outline of a lesson.
 Students should take part using pens / keyboard and the final submission should be saved as a
Word, PowerPoint or PDF file and uploaded to Moodle.
 Students would then be set a task to use this information for homework e.g. a quiz on Moodle
where they would need to refer to the presentation file to answer the questions.
4. On an interactive board, display a presentation that could be constructed in PowerPoint, Prezi,
Xerte, Smartscreen or SMART Notebook.
 Use hyperlinks to link to websites, embed video and sound and include quizzes.
 Have an interactive section of the presentation where students can answer questions or make
comments.
 Prezi: Write a question on the canvas and write the answer in much smaller text and
zoom in to reveal it.
 Create a question with multiple answers and ask students to choose the ‘path’ to the
correct answer.
 PowerPoint: Use animation to reveal answers on a click.
 SMART Notebook: Use the shade tool to reveal answers.
 Upload the completed presentation onto Moodle for future study.
5. Use portable devices to allow students to contribute to a discussion /presentation.
 For example, use a wireless keyboard and get students to participate and then save the
documents onto Moodle for further study.
 This can be done with a computer or an interactive board.
 Or get students to use their mobile phones to take photos/videos and upload them to Moodle
on a Blog or Forum.
6.
Use a video camera, digital camera (s) or scanner to gain images that contributes to the lesson.



This could be done before or during the lesson.
This activity could be further developed using Moviemaker (http://explore.live.com/windowslive-movie-maker) or PowerPoint and the final production loaded on to Moodle for further
study.
7. Recommend some appropriate Moodle files on your course that can be used by students to
develop the theme of the lesson.
 The more interactive these activities are the better e.g. quizzes forums & websites.
 For example use the Q & A forum on Moodle. A question can be posted on Moodle and
students need to answer this before they are able to see responses from their classmates.
8. Use a quiz program like Moodle Quiz & Hot Potato in the lesson as an interactive assessment tool.
 Have some form of follow up to the assessment activity e.g. comparison of answers and then a
second go, or work on collaborative responses.
9. Students use presentation software such as PowerPoint or Prezi to give presentations.
 There should be a time limit for each presentation and then a discussion or activity to follow.
 Care needed not to have too many presentations, or the students might switch off.
By following these guidelines, when questioned, students should be able to demonstrate how eLearning has enhanced their understanding and their enthusiasm.
*Interactive Board refers to a SMARTBoard or an e-Beam.







A lesson would be judged as grade 4 if any of the points below were reported and there were
no other e-learning activities that would improve the grade.
Not using e-learning where it would be appropriate to do so - e.g. not recommending a website
when it can be demonstrated that certain web sites would assist learning.
Using an interactive board just for registers.
Using an interactive board as a glorified white board.
Talking to a class with your back to them all the time, whilst using an interactive board.
Activities in a lesson that do not relate to the topic. E.g. a web site that does not show useful
information for the lesson.
