Population(s) served:
St. John’s Parishioners and the greater community who use our
facilities.
Purpose:
Maintains an inviting and pleasant atmosphere to worship and work in the parish
by cleaning the church and premises.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Every week the Custodian cleans and/or monitors as follows:
Pastoral Centre:
o vacuums all carpets;
o dusts all furniture, window sills, pictures, computers, printers, etc.;
o Sweeps all vinyl floors;
o cleans bathrooms including toilet bowls, mirrors, vanities, and sink;
o cleans any mildew that appears on window frames behind blinds;
Church:
o vacuums all carpets;
o dusts all window sills, pews, cushions, kneelers, furniture, piano and organ;
o cleans finger marks off glass panels in doors;
o sweeps hardwood floors;
o puts books back in order and removes and recycles leaflets and bulletins.
Hall:
o sweeps and washes floors;
o cleans bathrooms, including toilet bowls, mirrors, vanities and sinks;
o maintains and monitors an adequate supply of toilet paper, paper towels and soap
in all wash rooms;
o dusts window sills;
o polishes floors when necessary;
Kitchen:
o washes floors and waxes periodically:
o washes counters, sinks, and stoves when necessary;

o cleans the fridge and monitors the contents. (The freezer is normally not cleaned
unless requested.)
Garbage, Recycling and Compost;
o empties garbage pails and compost in the Pastoral Centre (office and meeting
rooms), kitchen,
o empties garbage pails vestry and bathrooms.
o Puts recycling out on the day of scheduled pick-up.
Mats
o vacuums all mats outside the Pastoral Centre, Hall and Church every week; shakes
mats as needed.
Windows:
o Cleans all lower-level inside windows in Pastoral Centre, Church and Hall (The
cleaning of other outside windows will be contracted out.)
Light bulbs:
o Monitors all exit lights on campus and replace when necessary.
o Monitors all other lights on site and change those that are reachable with a six-foot
ladder
Note: For other lights that are higher or unreachable, inform the Rector’s Warden as
soon as possible.
Security:
o Locks up after regularly scheduled cleaning duties.
o Locks up after cleaning for those functions that have contracted additional cleaning.
ie: weddings and funerals.
Note: Rental groups will be given specific instructions on securing the facility in
their signed agreements.
Rentals:
o cleans the church and hall after weddings and funerals. The date and time of these
events will be determined by contacting the Office Administrator. The Custodian
will receive additional reimbursement for this task.
Note: Renter groups will be responsible for the cleanliness of the facility as per
their specific rental agreement.
Minor Maintenance:
o Performs minor repairs: eg., fixing float in the toilet, tightening screws, fixing latches
or handles that come off, fixing weather-stripping that has come loose, repairing
broken kneelers, etc.
Note: For non-minor repairs, contact the Property Committee chairperson.
Other:
o Coordinates with Church committees regarding the use of facilities and their needs.

The Custodian meets regularly with the Office Administrator for support, feedback and
mentoring and any training required.
Skills & Knowledge Required:
o Knowledge of safe food and safe cleaning practices.
Qualifications Required:
o Demonstrated experience with custodial work.
Limits of the position:
o Will comply with the Diocesan Privacy and Parish of St. John’s Confidentiality
policies. Failure to do so could be cause for termination.
o Will receive a copy of the Diocesan Employment Standards (Regulation 6.9.01 and
Appendix G in the Diocesan Canons), and sign a form acknowledging acceptance of
these standards as terms and conditions of employment.
o Will comply with the Sexual Misconduct Policy of the Diocese of British Columbia,
and sign an acknowledgement form.
Terms of work/service:
o Hours and remuneration are set as per a contract.
o Must be aware of events scheduled in the Church, Church Hall and/or Pastoral Care
Centre in order to coordinate cleaning responsibilities.
o All supplies will be monitored and purchased by the Custodian from The Janitors’
Warehouse only (where the Church has an account).
o Annual performance review.
