Thomas a Becket – Henry II’s only real friend who becomes the Archbishop of Canterbury by
Henry II’s orders. Murdered in 1170.

Excommunication – the official act of throwing someone out of the Roman Catholic Church; a
very serious act because people believed that the person who was excommunicated was
cursed to hell after death
