ESSENTIAL QUESTION: Why did the Ancient Egyptians prosper?
Essential Transfer Goal: Students will use the English language to understand and describe interdependence among
people and nations.
ELD Standard 5: The language of Social Studies: English language learners communicate information, ideas and
concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Social Studies.
ES.SS.6.E.1.1 Explain how conflict, compromise and negotiation over the availability of resources (i.e. natural, human
and capital) impacted the economic development of various civilizations, societies and regions (e.g., competition for
scarce resources, unequal distribution of wealth and the emergence of powerful trading networks).
CONTENT OBJECTIVE: We will identify important characteristics of Ancient Egypt.
LANGUAGE OBJECTIVE: We will describe the life in Ancient Egypt.
1. We will review the vocabulary studied.
2. Go to my webpage. Some of you will click on the link the Nile: A river of Life, others will click on the link the Nile: A
river of Life (modified version).
3. In your teams, you will read the paragraphs 4 to 7 aloud. You will take turns. The students with the modified version
will read only the highlighted parts in yellow. After each paragraph, you will stop and discuss what you learned. I will
model for you. Everybody will express their ideas. The ones with the modified version ONE may use some Spanish.

4. You will share with the class what you have learned.
5. Go to my webpage. Some of you will click on Reading Comprehension Questions 1, and others on Reading
Comprehension Questions Yellow. You will answer the questions and then, you will compare your answers with a
partner and agree on which is the right answer.
6. We will check the answers.
7. We will watch a video titled Journals Through History: Ancient Egypt: Land of Abundance. I will provide you with a
video guide to answer, adjusted to your proficiency level.
8. We will compare our answers.
