Nitrogen heterocycles are unique class of compounds that contain one of more nitrogen atoms as part of cyclic organic structures. They display a wide variety of chemical properties and by itself are pursued as a separate subject in chemistry. The course will focus on electronic and chemical properties and commonly used methods of heterocycle synthesis, and applications. Course competencies: After the course student(s) will be knowledgeable about common reactions employed to synthesize heterocycles, their electronic properties, and uses. Topics: a. b. c. d. e. f. Nitrogen containing compounds Influence of nitrogen on reactivity of organic compounds Aromaticity and heteroatom aromatics Preparation of nitrogen containing heterocycles Reactions of nitrogeneous heterocycles Applications Grading: We will be meeting once every week to plan course content and direction of progress. You will be doing your independent study and research on aforementioned topics and submitting reports updating me of knowledge gained in each topic. Report length and frequency should conform to those required for writing-intensive courses.
