Job Description

This position is part of the Student Learning Centers which provide academic support to NAU undergraduate students and the Flagstaff Community. Curriculum development and preparation is an integral part of this position. The Student Learning Centers are looking for candidates who are highly adaptable, self-motivated, creative, dynamic, and enjoy working as part of a team.

The Instructional Specialist position is responsible for delivery of the quantitative portions of the

GRE ® & GMAT® Test Prep Courses. The selected candidate will have excellent presentation and instructional skills and be highly adept at math and quantitative reasoning. The courses may be videotaped for future use, therefore the selected candidate should be comfortable presenting in academic professional attire while being videotaped.

This position will report to the Coordinator at the South Student Learning Center and requires evening and weekend availability.

Duties and Responsibilities

Instruct students on quantitative reasoning portion of the GRE ® & GMAT®.

Develop, plan, and implement class and 1:1 lessons and course packs.

Guide students in their preparation for the exam and what to expect.

Teach test taking strategies and learning techniques.

Work with the Coordinator and other SLC staff to ensure the delivery of the instruction is aligned with the goals and mission of the department.

Communicate progress and outcomes of program; makes suggestions for modifications and improvement of program.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR,

Four years of progressively responsible instructional or subject work experience; OR,

Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

 Master’s degree in Mathematics or related field.

Familiarity with GRE ® & GMAT® test preparation courses.

Knowledge of FERPA and ethical principles working with students.

Experience in classroom management.

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

GRE ® and/or GMAT® official or proctored practice score submission required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work independently.

Knowledge of test-taking strategies applicable to the GRE ® & GMAT®.

The ability to teach students how to use logic, think critically, analyze problems, recognize relevant information and determine at what point there is sufficient information to reach a conclusion.

Willingness to try new techniques and strategies; open to change.

General Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per

AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Please note: applicants under contract with the NAU Graduate College for an assistantship are not eligible to work both the assistantship and the test prep position.

Salary

$32/hour.

FSLA Status

Non-Exempt.
