Homework Performance Objectives

Dear Parents,
Here is a list of 2nd grade performance objectives that have been aligned with
the Common Core Standards. Your child will be tested for mastery of each of these
items. Common Core Standards are in parentheses after some objectives. By
Googling the Standard, you can find activities you can do with your child if you wish
do more homework with them. Thanks for being a part of your child’s homework
experience. It is a known fact that children completing homework assignments on a
consistence basis score higher on tests and gain mastery more quickly.
Assignments that require written work must be returned to the teacher in
the homework folder the following day. Those that don’t require written work just
need a parent’s initial on the homework calendar.
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES ALIGNED WITH COMMON CORE
STANDARDS
Reading
R1 Parent writes a list of 10 words. Child writes them in alphabetical order to the
second letter.
R2 Parent writes a list of 10 words the begin with the same first and second letter.
Child writes them in alphabetical order to the third letter.
R3 Bridge Map of_____________________.
R4 Use a “Flow Map” to sequence a series of events in a book you just read. (2RL5)
R5 Parent says a combination of 10 sentences and groups of words and groups of
words that are complete or incomplete sentences. Child tells whether the sentence
is complete or incomplete. Example: The little boy ran to the park. The little boy.

R6 Child reads 15 minutes and fills out Reading Log. Parent MUST initial log
each night.
R7 Parent asks child to tell the main characters, setting, and plot of a story the

R8 Parent says 10 sentences. Child tells whether each is a statement or a
question. Example: Did you see that falling star? My mother went

R9 Parent writes a list of 10 words. Child highlights vowels in each word and tells
if vowels have a long or short sound. On the homework sheet, child must write long

R10 Parent says 10 vocabulary words from current and previous weekly lists.
Child tells what each word means and says a sentence in which he word is used
correctly.
R11 Parent asks child 5 questions about a story the parent and child have read

R12 Parent writes a list of 10 words. Child writes the abbreviation.
R13 Parent says 10 contractions. Child writes the 2 original words. (ex.

R14 Parent says 10 root words. Child tells whether each can have the suffix –ed or
–ing or the prefix re- or un- added to make a new word. Child writes new words.

R23 Parent writes 10 words with suffixes, -ing,- ed, -er, -est. Child circles the base

Math
M1 Write 6 fact families using two addition and two subtraction problems for each

M2 Count forward and backward 1-1000 (2NO2)
M3 Parent writes 10 numbers from 1-1000. Child writes odd or even by each

M4 Tell time on a digital and analog clock to the nearest 5 minute interval. (2MD7)
M5 Write < > or = between two numbers 1-1,000. (ex. 356>223; 456<498; 776=776,

M6 Parent writes 10 numbers between 1-500 and child writes them in order from

M7 Parent uses flashcards to help practice addition and subtraction facts to 18 for
15 minutes. Flashcards can be found at the Dollar Store, Target, or Wal-Mart.

M8 Parent writes 15 math problems for child to do using addition of 2 digit

M9 Parent writes 15 problems for child to do using subtraction of 2 digit numbers

M10 Child finds and labels pictures showing these geometric figures: sphere,
rectangular prism, cylinder, cube, triangular pyramid.
M11 Parent writes 10 equations with missing element. Child writes in missing

M12 Child draws pictures or cuts from magazines pictures of shapes showing
congruency or symmetry.
M13 Parents write 10 numbers between 1-1000 and child writes them in expanded

M14 Child practices measuring with these units of measure: inches, feet,

M15 Child reads a thermometer to nearest degree, F and C

M30 Using a Bridge Map, child maps the equivalent relationships for inches/foot,
minutes/hour, hour/day, months/years, pennies/dollars, etc.
M31 Parent and child measure the length of 5 items using inches, then again using
centimeters.
M32 Parent writes 10 numbers ranging from 100 to 999. Child writes each number
using hundreds, tens, and ones. Ex. parent writes 397, child writes 3 hundreds+9

Writing
W1 Parent helps child write a story about a true experience. Make sure it has a
clear beginning, middle, and end. Check for correct punctuation. (2W3)

Spelling
S1 Practice writing your spelling words by hiding them in a picture you have
drawn.
S2 Study your spelling words by writing them 3 times each.
S3 Write each word in a complete sentence. Remember to use correct

S4 Write your spelling words in pyramid style.
S5 Write your spelling words in rainbow style.
S6 Write each spelling word and its value (vowels= 2 points and consonants
=1point. (ex. cat=4 points)
S7 Write your spelling words on the computer using a different font from each
