This assignment is a comparative analysis. You will write about Clark’s “Crimson
Leopard-Print Headscarves” and “Reinventing the Veil.”
Purpose: Comparing and contrasting is an important academic skill. It allows writers to
draw rich connections between disparate ideas and to hone broad ideas to a sharp focus.
But comparing and contrasting also poses a unique set of organizational challenges. In
this assignment, you will practice thinking in terms of differences and similarities and
presenting these differences and similarities in a balanced and organized way.
Assignment: Write an thesis-driven argument of at least 1000 words in which you
 closely analyze distinct features of each text (related to content, rhetorical
features, or both);
 provide solid evidence (specific textual examples) to support your points.
 frame your comparison/contrast within a larger argument, or thesis, which
suggests what the significance of this comparison/contrast might be.
 meet the required length
 have a title.
Your essay must have:
 An introduction that clearly refers to both texts – with titles and authors and a
brief summary of the relevant information.
 At least 2-3 specific points of comparison between the texts.
 A complex thesis, which mentions the points of comparison and their
significance.
 A clear organization plan: point-by-point or block organization with appropriate
transitions.
 A topic sentence as the first sentence of each body paragraph.
 A combination of in-text quotations, paraphrase, and summary.
 Proper documentation of citations and sources (MLA format).
 A Works Cited page (MLA format).
Advanced features:
 You may focus only on similarities or only on differences, or do both.
 The important thing is to look for unexpected lines of argument, for the less
obvious similarities and differences.
You should answer the following questions in your essay:
 How might your analysis of the texts help to see them in a new light or understand
them better?
 Does one text reach its audience more effectively than the other? How and why?
Crucial factors:
 The essay has few and minor grammar errors.
 The assignment is submitted on time and includes all working materials.
 The paper is well formatted following academic standards.
