Composition 2H
Time travel, the subject of many sci fi books, stories, and movies and the dream of many people for
generations is finally a reality! It is controlled by the Department of Time Travel who only permits a limited
number of people to travel each year. You want to be one of those select few. Write to the Department of
Time Travel asking to be chosen. To help them in their decision, they are asking that you identify two
points and places in time to which you’d like to travel and provide at least one reason for each choice. Each
reason must be supported with specific facts and/or examples.
This is to be a four-paragraph essay. Organize your essay as follows:
Evaluation rubric (60 points)
1. Topic paragraph (8 points)
The paragraph begins with something that captures the reader’s attention.
Necessary background information is included.
The paragraph ends with a thesis statement
The thesis states the topic of the essay.
The thesis may introduce supporting points, but does not use the same wording as in the
supporting paragraphs; in other words, you do not repeat yourself.
Support is clear and complete.
2. Supporting paragraphs (26 points)
Each includes a topic sentence that includes something transitional and introduces the topic of
that paragraph. The topic sentence in the second supporting paragraph should also
contain a reference to the thesis.
Each paragraph presents one destination and at least one reason.
The content remains focused on your purpose in writing.
There is clear and logical organization within paragraphs.
Main points are developed and defended with facts, statistics, and examples.
All elements are related.
3. Organization (6 points)
There is clear and logical organization among paragraphs.
Transitions are used to introduce supporting facts, statistics, and examples and to relate them to
the reasons.
Transitions are varied.
Transitions are used correctly and grammatically.
4. Conclusion (6 points)
The conclusion begins with a restatement of the thesis
This is followed by a restatement or summary of the two main points in the same order as they
appear in the essay.
These lead to your final point, which may be the overall result of what you have presented and
should refer to your hook.
5. Word choice (2 points)
Word choices are interesting, varied, precise and appropriate to audience and task.
There are no overused words or phrases.
6. MUGS/SS (12 points)
Spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and usage are correct.
Sentence beginnings and sentence length and structure are varied.
Sentences are clear and not wordy.
There are no fragments or run-on sentences.
The essay is correctly formatted.
