Blackboard: Check the course website everyday for various announcements
All work will be distributed via the course website.
Grading policy: The final grade will be based on 4 components: homework( 25%) quizzes
(20%), midterm exam (25%), and final exam (30%). The midterm exam and the final exam
dates will be announced at a later time. The lowest score for homework and lowest score of quiz
will be dropped. All quizzes will be unannounced and will be based on the material covered in
class or a couple of previous classes. You must bring your textbook and a calculator for all
exams. Use of cell phones as calculators is not permitted.
Absence policy: If you miss a quiz or a midterm, a make up will be given only if you have well
documented reason (example a doctor’s note). No make up will be given in any other
circumstances. Late HW will not be accepted, without a compelling reason, which you must
communicate to me promptly. If you must be away from class on a given day on which graded
work is due, contact me BEFORE class that day and explain the need for your absence. In such
a situation, your absence can be excused, although there will not be any opportunities to make-up
missed work. Work missed owing to excused absence will not count against a student’s grade.
Still, students are responsible for learning the material that is covered, even if they cannot be in
class.

Learning Focus: Logical thinking and understanding; self-learning. Think, write and talk in
complete sentences and sensibly. Describe the context clearly. Arguments should be coherent
and make common sense. Take ownership of what you write or say. Totally avoid
mechanical “plug-in numbers in formulas” mode. Before you use a formula, you must
explain why that formula is appropriate.
Learning outcomes:
As a result of completing this course, students will be able to:
1. Summarize data and draw conclusions form them.
2. Calculate and interpret probabilities.
3. Construct confidence intervals and perform tests of hypotheses.
4. Perform a simple linear regression and interpret results.
RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS: Students should notify the faculty during the first two weeks (no
exceptions) of the semester of their intention to be absent from class on their day(s) of religious
observance.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Students should abide by the GW Code of Academic Integrity. It states: “Academic dishonesty is
defined as cheating of any kind, including misrepresenting one's own work, taking credit for the
work of others without crediting them and without appropriate authorization, and the fabrication
of information.” For the remainder of the code, see: http://www.gwu.edu/~ntegrity/code.html
