Savannah State University Position Description – SECURITY OFFICER SUPERVISOR Position Title: Security Officer Supervisor FLSA Status: Non-exempt Reports To: Police Lieutenant Department: Public Safety Date Prepared: October, 2011 BASIC FUNCTION Supervises and coordinates the activities and personnel of assigned area to maintain security and safety of people and property. Conducts briefings and coordinates training and special assignments. NATURE & SCOPE Reporting to the Police Lieutenant, in a team leader capacity, supervises and monitors residential facilities and parking areas; opens campus facilities for business and secures them following the close of business. Reports unusual or suspicious activities to supervisor for follow up. Incumbents are required to maintain flexible work schedules in order to accommodate weekend or evening shifts. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES Coordinate the work activities of others. Patrol assigned areas; investigates and/or reports hazards, unusual or suspicious circumstances to campus police unit for correction or follow-up actions Observe activity and traffic in assigned area to enforce university rules/regulations; alert visitors of infractions. Assist persons in buildings or on grounds needing directions or campus information. Respond to alarms and dispatched calls Unlock buildings/doors after checking identification and compliance with university policies. May prepare written reports as directed by supervisor. Assist law enforcement officers with crowd control and surveillance at large public events. SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Three years of experience in police or security field. Four years of high school or GED equivalent. Valid driver’s license is required. Knowledge of basic security and fire inspection procedures. Skill in both verbal and written communication; skill in observing situations and decision making; skill in dealing courteously with public. Skill in leading the work of others. Ability to maintain confidential or highly sensitive information is required.
