Lets Talk: Dysphagia Across Settings

Panel addressing diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia including bedside clinical swallow evaluations, instrumental
assessments, and intensive therapy across settings.
Panel Participants
Amy Bilecan M.S, CCC-SLP
Amy has a Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology from the University of Kansas. Amy currently works for SSM
Rehabilitation Network at St. Mary’s hospital doing acute care. She has also worked PRN at St. Louis University hospital. Amy has
over 10 years of experience with evaluation and treatment with patients with speech, language, voice, and cognitive-linguistic and
swallowing disorders. Amy is a registered MBS ImP Clinician and performs FEES. She has worked in acute care, acute rehab,
outpatient, primarily with adults, but also briefly in the NICU.
Kathy Berdnarek M.A, CCC-SLP
Kathy has worked in acute medical settings, Acute Rehabilitation, Skilled Care/Extended Care facilities, and outpatient clinics. She is
experienced in evaluation, treatment, and management of speech/language challenges related to CVA and brain injury, voice
disorders, and swallowing. Kathy is a graduate of St. Louis University's Department of Communication Disorders (Undergraduate
and Graduate degrees).
Margie Estes M.S, CCC-SLP
Margie Estes graduate from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, with a degree in speech-language pathology. Primarily for the
past 24 years Margie as worked in the hospital setting. Over, the last 10 year Margie has worked at the Rehab Institute of St. Louis.
During that time from Margie received certification in Vital Stimulation, certification in FEES and the opportunity to educate, train
and supervise employees in using the FEES. In addition, Margie has given presentations at conferences on the purpose, functions and
appropriate clientele to engage in Vital Stimulation therapy. More over, Margie has access and utilizes the Experia, which provides
additional functions to aid in swallow recovery.
Amy Mosier M.S, CCC-SLP
Amy Mosier obtained her Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale after
completing her undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree at Purdue University. Amy currently works for SSM Rehabilitation
Network at SSM DePaul Health Center. Amy has varied clinical experience in pediatrics, geriatrics and adults; primarily with focuses
on neuro-rehabilitation, brain-injury and acute care. Amy has experience with evaluation and treatment of inpatient and outpatient
populations presenting with swallowing disorders, speech, language and cognitive-linguistic disorders. Amy is a registered MBSImP
Clinician and is also completing training for certification of FEES.
Andrea Vaughan, MS, CCC-SLP
Andrea received both her Bachelor's and Master's of Science degrees in Speech-Language Pathology from Southern Illinois University
in Carbondale. Since then, Andrea has worked in skilled nursing facilities in the Saint Louis area for RehabCare. Currently, Andrea
works in the acute care setting at Barnes Jewish Hospital. She provides services to adults in all areas of the hospital as well as evaluate
and treat premature and drug exposed infants with feeding difficulties. Andrea has extensive training and experience in Modified
Barium Swallow studies and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluations of Swallowing for patient's with various etiologies, along with
VitalStim therapy.
Overview
The panel will provide a structured overview of their experience as described above. In addition, a open
discussion on a swallowing disorders and treatment plans will be discussed among the panel members
and the audience. The panel includes experts and practicing clinicians however, the audience will
represent the treating therapist. Please be prepared with questions for the panel, case study-like questions
are appropriate along with general questions regarding dysphagia and treatment.

Missouri Speech-Language-Hearing Association is approved by the Continuing Education Board of the
American Speech Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to provide continuing education activities in
speech-language pathology and audiology. This program is offered for .3 CEUs (intermediate level;
professional area). MSHA CE provider approval does not imply endorsement of course content, specific
products or clinical procedures.
*PT’s, OT’s, and other health care professionals attending will receive a certificate of attendance.

Participants will be able to:
 Describe different strategies for evaluation of dysphagia used in a variety of healthcare settings.
 Identify patients who may benefit from different strategies that are used for dysphagia.
 List pros and cons regarding different strategies that are used for dysphagia.
 Identify contact resources for information about different strategies used for dysphagia.
