Communications Officer, Marketing and Advocacy
Summary
This important role requires an individual with a strong ability to work in a team but also on their own
initiative. Under the guidance of the Communications Manager, you will bring with you excellent written and
verbal communication skills, confidence in using a range of communications tools and strong ICT skills. You
will be highly motivated, enjoy working as part of a hard working and professional team and have an interest
in the arts. This is a great opportunity for someone with communications experience, who is looking to further
develop a career in arts marketing.
About Artswork
Artswork is a national youth arts development agency, committed to transforming the lives of children and
young people through arts and cultural practice.
Artswork’s mission is to place the arts at the heart of work with, for and by children and young people and to
champion, lead and facilitate high quality work led by artists, arts and cultural organisations including the
development of young arts practitioners/leaders.
Artswork works through strategic alliances with the arts, cultural, education, youth and community sectors
and aim to act as national champion to increase opportunities for children and young people to lead,
participate, work in, experience and enjoy the arts.
Artswork delivers work through
our role as the Bridge Delivery Organisation for the South East region. Artswork is supported by Arts
Council England to deliver this major strategic role (from April 2012 to March 2018)

As the Bridge Organisation for South East England, funded by Arts Council England, Artswork will support the
delivery of the Arts Council’s goal to ensure that every child and young person has the opportunity to
experience the richness of the arts.
As part of this role, Artswork will develop and deliver a strategic approach to increase access to the arts with,
for and by children, young people and their families, in and out of school (particularly in areas of least
engagement) - and including embedding Arts Awards and Artsmark – under the following priorities

To improve the delivery of arts and cultural opportunities for children and young people

To raise the standard of arts and cultural work being produced for, with and by children and young people

Overall purpose of the job
To support the work of the Communications Department, led by the Communications Manager, to ensure
high quality, effective and regular flow of internal and external communication. You will work across
Artswork’s strategic and delivery programmes on advocacy and on promoting Artswork’s profile.
Key Accountabilities
Working with the Communications Manager and in accordance with Artswork’s
Communications Strategy you will:
Marketing and Advocacy Campaigns
Deliver and support the coordinate and marketing and advocacy campaigns using
data intelligence including tools like Google Analytics and Facebook insights
key events and milestones in Artswork’s shared diary
Artswork’s content, - news and resources
a range of communication tools
Content Curations
You will write and research content for a range of media platforms including
artswork.org.uk and online platforms
Artswork enewsletters
peer, sector and industry media – print and online publications
advocacy and publicity documents – print and online
Social media
Plot the weekly and upcoming opportunities of social media activity in-line with the
digital strategy and shared diary
Research press and advocacy opportunities and platforms

Administration, Financial Management and Legal Compliance
ensure all work is delivered effectively within budget constraints, in line with Artswork’s financial
administration and reporting requirements and as directed by the Communications Manager
undertake the necessary administration involved in delivering the role
work closely with colleagues and partners to ensure compliance with all relevant legislative
requirements, including health and safety, safeguarding and equalities

Person Specification
Knowledge
Essential
Knowledge of communication tools
Knowledge of a range of IT applications including Word, Excel,
Outlook, Access and Powerpoint
Knowledge of various digital platforms and tools
Knowledge of and/or interest in the arts
Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues
Qualifications
Educated to A Level standard or equivalent and/or with range of
relevant experience
Experience
Experience of marketing and coordinating events
Experience of general office-based administrative systems such as
filing, archiving, maintaining mailing lists, managing phone and
email messages
Experience of effectively planning campaigns and marketing plans
Experience of working as part of a team
Marketing experience preferably within an arts, youth or education
setting organisation
Skills
Strong communication and ICT skills (written, verbal,
presentations) including MS Word, Excel, Access and Outlook
Excellent organisational and administrative skills, the ability to
prioritise workload and keen attention to detail
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, responding
effectively in person, in writing, via email and over the phone
Ability to manage multiple priorities, work well under pressure and
meet deadlines
Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise with

The place of work will be the Artswork’s offices - 2nd Floor Cadogan House, 37 Commercial Road,
Southampton, SO15 1GG and as required by Artswork at such other places where the organisation carries on
