Genoa Model United Nations Genoa, 20th February — 22nd February 2014 Health Name: School: Country Rappresented: U N I T E D NAT I O N S NAT I O N S U N I E S THE SECRETARY-GENERAL -MESSAGE TO THE GENOA MODEL UNITED NATIONS 2014 CONFERENCE, (GeMUN) Genoa, 20-22 February 2014 Your participation in this Model UN comes at a time of opportunity and risk for the human family. We are the first generation that can end extreme poverty -- yet people and the planet face the rising pressures of a warming climate, growing inequality and exploitation from mines to fields to factory floor. The United Nations works every day, around the clock, across the world, to confront today’s emergencies while building foundations of peace for tomorrow. We are feeding the hungry, fighting disease and pressing for a nuclear-weapon-free world. We are strengthening peacekeeping, peacebuilding and preventive diplomacy as well as our tools for justice and accountability. Our sights are also set on the key year of 2015: the deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals, reaching an agreement on climate change and adopting a bold vision for the period beyond 2015 that will advance economic growth, social progress and environmental stewardship. These plans are ambitious. We need people to make them real. That means I count on you to use the negotiating skills you learn in this Model UN exercise to help navigate the real-world challenges we face. I encourage you to join forces with like- minded individuals and groups to generate change and promote mutual tolerance, understanding and respect. I also hope you will link to the United Nations through our Twitter and Facebook accounts. Technology has globalized communications. Now we have to globalize compassion and citizenship. In a world that is more connected, we must be more united. With our fates ever more entwined, our future must be one of ever deeper and wider cooperation. That is the global logic of our times. I look forward to the contributions you will make to our shared work for peace, development and human rights. Please accept my best wishes for a memorable experience. Eleni Antoniou GeMUN Director : Ms. Dina Eduardovna Kotel’nikova Secretary General Eleonora Bartolini Honorable Participants, fellow Officers and Delegates, esteemed Visitor, I am honored to welcome you all to the 11th session of the Genoa Model United Nations. My Name is Eleonora Bartolini, I am 18 years old and this is my 5th GeMUN. GeMUN Conference is not only a passion but also a responsibility: we are young and we have the moral duty to be active citizens of the world. In this letter, I would like to underline that GeMUN Conference is the result of co-operating, merging ideas and opinions, that it improves our culture, our mental agility and our EDUCATION. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” This is what Nelson Mandela said and this is what we will try to demonstrate and realize during these 3 days. This year we try to change the world in terms of “HEALTH”. As the World Health Organization Constitution declares: “the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of Every human being..” and “the world needs a global health guardian, a custodian of values, a protector and defender of health, including the right to health.” As De Margaret Chan, DirectorGeneral WHO states. I really wish you a memorable GeMUN Conference and keep in mind our motto: “We analyze, we care, we create!” Eleonora Bartolini Secretary General GeMUN 2014 Deputy Secretary General Matteo Lomi Dear MUN Directors and participants, My name is Matteo Lomi, I’m 16, and it’s an immense honor for me to be covering the role of Under Secretary General and President of the Development Commission in this edition of GeMUN. As member of the secretariat and of the GeMUN Expert Group, I have to say that we worked hard all year long to come up with what we hope will be the best edition of GeMUN. I started my MUN career about three years ago, and since then I got more and more involved in this type of conferences. In this short time, I had the chance to attend thirteen MUN conferences, here in Genoa, and abroad. After my first GeMUN, I immediately got involved in the Expert Group, which is the group that helps creating a new conference every year. After many experiences as delegate in local and abroad conferences, I decided to become a chair, and hold a committee. I learned that chairing is not only keeping the committee and tell delegates to come to order, it is instead the best way to help them growing in MUN career. I then felt ready to take the challenge, and become member of the secretariat, which gave me the chance to further help in the creation of this conference. This year’s conference is focused on the main theme of health. We believe that health is one of the most fundamental and burning issues we could cover. It is also one of the goals of the “Millennium Development Goals”. As the World Health Organization Constitution declares: “The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental Rights of every human being…" and De Margaret Chan, Director-General WHO states: “The World needs a global health guardian, a custodian of values, a protector and defender of health, including the right to health." This is why we decided to cover this main theme in this conference, as we believe something more must be done to reach some of the Millennium Goals, and find ways to solve these issues. I wishing to see you all in the upcoming GeMUN conference, with the spirit and energy to bring up a fruitful and interesting debate on these burning issues. Deputy Secretary General Martina Pessino Honorable Delegates, Distinguished Officers and Esteemed MUN Directors. My name is Martina Pessino and I am the Under Secretary General at GeMUN 2014 conference, which is the 11th edition of such a prestigious event. I am 18 years old and I attend the last year of secondary school at Liceo Linguistico Grazia Deledda. After that, I intend to focus my future studies toward the medical field. Therefore it is obvious that the theme of this year's conference, "Health", interests me in particular. Nevertheless, since the majority of the world's population is affected everyday from various diseases, inadequate hygienic condition, poor-feeding, lack of information on the subject and other different motivations, it is fundamental to tackle such issue. It is also to be stated that the population is not only composed by those who are wealthy and that can afford to take care of their health, but also by less fortunates, who need governmental support in order to gain such rights guaranteed. Keeping this in mind, I invite all of you delegates to take your work at GeMUN in the most serious way possible, with the aim of searching and providing concrete solutions to this urgent topic. This is an opportunity to raise your voice and give a contribute to improve our society. Do not waste it! I am looking forward to meeting you during these 3 days and wish you all a productive and successful debate. . Under Secretary General UniLevel Agnese Cigliano Dear delegates of the Genoa Model UN 2014, my name is Agnese Cigliano and I’m an Italian student majoring in Law at the Federico II University of Naples, the city in which I grew up. I am interested in political and juridical issues both at national and international level and I was eventually able to combine these interests with my studies. Indeed, I am now writing my final thesis in International Criminal Law with a focus on the circumstances of the Rwandan Genocide. Loving to travel, discover new cultures, “taste” the world and debate, MUNs are clearly one of my greatest passions. I participated in my first MUN in 2010 and now it is a honor for me to serve as Under Secretary General for the University Level and Chair of the Legal Committee at the GeMUN 2014. President of International Court of Justice Margherita Parodi My name is Margherita Parodi, I am seventeen years old and I am currently attending my fourth year of high school in Liceo Linguistico Internazionale Grazia Deledda, in Genoa. My studies focus on foreign languages such as English, French and Arabic. My hobbies are reading and going to swimming , while my main values regard friendship and family. I am thankful for all the opportunities I have had the chance to take advantage of. I took part in several MUNs such as GeMUN during the previous two years, PaMUN 2012, CGSMUN 2013 and I will participate to SpiMUN 2014. MUNs always gave me the possibility to build strong relationships with people with a different background and also to compare my point of view with others'. I am now the President of the International Court of Justice of GeMUN 2014 and I am thrilled, since the ICJ is the field I am the most interested in, I find it fascinating since it concerns solving disputes between countries in order to find a satisfying balance. This can be tough to be realised sometimes but challenges spur oneself to fight for bigger goals. I have always been interested in international relations, which is what I would like to study at university. I strongly believe our lives nowadays are set in an international frame and the best way to reach productive communication is learning languages and how to deal with anyone in the world. I hope one day I will be able to work for a UN organisation in order to cooperate for a better future, because young people have the future in their hands. Heads of the Staff Honorable Participants, fellow Officers and Delegates, esteemed Visitors, indispensable Staff, as Heads of the Staff it is our greatest pleasure to welcome you all to the outstanding event that is Genoa Model United Nations 2014. Our organizational work was indeed very hard and tiring. Many of us dedicated entire afternoons in order to succeed in having such a grand conference. Our best skills were put at your disposal: commitment, dedication and collaboration. This has been a unique experience and it will be useful for all of us in the future. We have been taught how to face responsibilities, how to cooperate in large groups and how to work together in order to create something real for you. We truly hope you will enjoy these days and appreciate our efforts.
