Diabetes in Primary Care Course NERS Presentation March 2014 Kevin Russell NERS Coordinator RCT Scheme Overview Background Information • Welsh Government (WG) funded scheme •Working in Partnership with Welsh Local Government Association, local authorities, Public Health Wales and local health boards •NERS has been in development since 2006 •Targets clients who are at risk of developing chronic disease by providing access to a high quality supervised exercise programme Aim Of NERS • To increase the long term participation in physical activity of clients • To improve physical and mental health of clients • To offer a systematic and safely controlled system of referral to exercise How it works Scheme Detail • • • • 2 Activity Sessions per week Discounted entry (Currently £1.50) Group based sessions Operates from Leisure Centres Types of Group classes •Functional Fitness/Easy Circuits •Gym Taster •Aqua Gym/ Aqua Aerobics •Zumba •Bowls •Walking/Nordic Walking •Chair Aerobics NERS DATA • 8% of referrals to Merthyr have Diabetes as one of the reasons for referral and 10% in RCT • Total referrals to NERS across Cwmtaf is 2,436 v Target 2,520 • 60% female referred to RCT 67% female referred to Merthyr • 60% Completion Feedback • The classes are helping me regain confidence in myself, which over the past couple of years had been lost. • I have no negatives about the whole scheme, everything is positive and I look forward to the classes. •The first time I attended I was very nervous due to being in a class among people I didn’t know and soon made friends and value this experience.
